I took the June 2015 SAT and my scores were:
630- Math
580- Writing
550- Critical Reading
Essay- 10
Composite Score: 1760 ( 76th-78th Percentile; which is not good at all)
For the one of the math sections, i couldn’t answer 5 of the questions since i ran out time, but i’m pretty sure if i got them right, i would’ve gotten somewhere between a 650-670. Anyway, i’m really disappointed with my scores. I was shooting for a score anywhere between 1900-2100. Is it possible to improve my scores? I’m aiming for a 700 in math, at least a 620-650 in critical reading, and a 650 for writing. Is this possible? I’ve done all of the tests in the blue book and i’m working on the online SAT course. So far, for math, i’m getting scores from 610-660, but mostly 650’s in math. I haven’t started the critical reading and writing yet, but i’ll update my score status. I’m really disappointed that i spend all of this time preparing and studying yet i’m not able to hit the 700 mark for math. I go over my mistakes and understand why i got them wrong, but when it comes to taking another timed practice test, i stress out and my score plummets. I’m pretty sure i just have an issue with timed tests. Is there any way than practicing to get good at this? What am i doing wrong? Is it the way i study or something? I really need some help here.
I read this online somewhere, but it said that the math portion of the SAT is usually harder in May and June. Maybe it that was the situation you were in which caused the low math score for that test.
You’re doing the right thing to go over mistakes after you get them wrong. When I take practice test for the math, I tend to score around 620-700. It is a wide scope, but I also need to get my math score up. For math, it seems like practice makes perfect. You need to condition yourself to familiarize with the content that will be on the SAT. Also, for reading, do you think the vocab portion of the test may be affecting your score? If so, it is better to leave questions you have no idea to the answer to because on the SAT you are penalized for every wrong answer (1/4 for every wrong answer). Reading, I believe, was the hardest subject to do well in (as for me). I started with a 490 and brought my score all the way to a 680-700 range within a year of non-consistent studying… -_- Your essay score is good, so I guess that means you are getting a fair number of the writing questions wrong. What I would recommend is to practice on the writing section. Don’t time yourself at first, take your time to thoroughly look through the question and find the mistake (if there is one). Do this a few times, and once you get around a desired score, try timing yourself as you do the writing sections. Without time, my writing score is around (680-740 based on an essay score of 8).
I don’t know how much time you have left, but I recommend taking the test without time at first, and really focus on getting the right answer. That’s is what I do… I take 3 practice SAT test every 2 weeks. All of them are not timed. I also make sure that one of the SAT test I take, I finish in one sitting… it is tiring, but I am trying to conidtion my self from doing maybe 2 sections a day to a whole entire test in one sitting. Next step, is to time myself… etc
Hope this was a little bit useful… if not at all
Assuming you’d like to apply to some pretty high caliber schools, your SAT scores aren’t all that bad. You’re above average, which is always a good thing!
As for getting your scores up I would just try and do a practice test at least everyday, TRUST ME, it doesn’t work for everyone, but it does help you on multiple levels. It can help get you within the time zone you’d like to finish so when it comes down to it you can finish those last 5 math problems and also it will just broaden your knowledge of what the test is like, making you even more receptive to the questions. Study by yourself at home without any distraction and it will help you get within your wanted time zone.
I know it helped me! Hope I helped! :)>-
Do you think re-taking practice tests I’ve already taken is a bad idea? Thanks for the replies. I’m not going to give up and strive to figure something out.
I ask this because I’ve actually done this before. There was this practice SAT I took, and scored really badly on, but i took it again a couple of months later, and my score didn’t budge by much. Does retaking previously taken SAT practice tests a good habit?
By all means, if retaking is what you want to do, do it. The problem with me retaking tests I have already taken is that I get bored of seeing questions I have once answered. You should really focus on questions you get wrong again when you retake. By doing that, you will be exposed to questions that you keep missing, and once you know how to solve those kind of problems, you will know what to do when it comes time to actually taking the test.
I never thought about retaking a SAT practice test! Thanks for giving the idea.
I plan on making a test composed of all of the questions I’ve ever gotten wrong on the practice SAT tests.
Just an update here. I just took a practice Critical reading test on the SAT online course. Surprisingly, i scored a 670. That’s ridiculous. My “main-line” scores are in the 500-600 range; nowhere near 670. I really hope this wasn’t due to chance or luck.
