So the Pope is visiting the USA. His visit is dominating the news. He is only visiting the east coast. Are any of you on the east coast going to try and see him? Anyone dealing with his visit in any other way?
Any comments about the visit that will not get you in to trouble on CC? As said, his visit seems to be a very big deal.
It’s kind of funny. It’s like a celebrity watch - but yet, it’s the Pope! Just don’t put him in the “celebrity” category - he’s sort of his very own special category!
I enjoy hearing famous people speak - if I could hear (and understand) him speak I would be in the crowd. But then again, I really don’t like crowds!
I am in DC now. I planned my trip well before the Pope did! H and I thought we could be tourists on the Mall for a day or two. Hahahaha.
The parade is tomorrow at 11 AM. The checkpoints to view it open at 4 AM. I bet there will be lines already. He only goes a very small way. You can check the guide of street closings- it is 12 pages long!
There were priests on my flight. I went into the lav right after one. He left the seat up. I guess he’s not used to living with women.
I’ll be glad when Thursday evening rolls around. Phew…
But seriously, he should have hit Chicago and LA instead of three close places on the east coast.
Isn’t he called “People’s Pope” who, I think, has the inclination to side with those who “have not” and does not like someone like Trump. Also, I guess he might like Joe Biden better than Paul Ryan, even though both are Catholic.
Do you think he will have the gut to criticize our capitalism during his visit?
I do not know this, so please enlighten me on this: In the US, do we have more Protestants than Catholics? What is the ratio between these two groups of people? I guess we have much more Protestants. After all, it seems Protestants played a major role in the early years of our country. (Were the colleges like HYP established by Protestants? Were Notre Dame and Georgetown established by Catholics?)
I own a business that is requiring a lot of adjustments to deal with the traffic. Not that I don’t care, but I can’t think of a single person I’d go stand at the mall to only catch a glimpse of in the distance. I just hope the bunglers who can’t keep crazy people from jumping the white house fence aren’t in charge of his security.
I understand not going to LA greenwich, as it is 4 or 5 hours flight away. But what about Boston?? It is probably known as the most Catholic east coast city.
I once read from somewhere that the health condition of this Pope was not very good when he was “young” (when he was not as old as he is now.) I think he is now 78 yo.
I kinda like this Pope as well, even though I am not a Catholic.
The Pope has criticized “unfettered” capitalism and has preached against not the making of profit, but the idolatry of money and profits above other considerations.
Prime example is the thread on the the hedge-fund manager turned pharmaceutical company owner who bought a company producing a life-saving “orphan” drug and than jacked the price up 5,000 percent. A course of treatment that used to cost about $1,000 now would cost $63,000 — as high as $634,000 for a long-term patient.
My nephew is getting married in New York City this Thursday. At 1 pm. And no, I have no idea why he picked such an odd time. It sounds like the city will be in gridlock. One friend who works in the city said she is not even going to work that day. So I punted my plan to drive into the city. I will be staying with a CC friend in Connecticut and taking the train to Grand Central. Then I have to make it two miles to the wedding venue. It’s not an easy shot by subway, so I may just walk. And yes, I understand that New Yorkers think in terms of blocks and not miles, but at least I can tell I can probably just walk the distance if I need to. I’m kind of stressed about the whole thing, to be honest. My hair won’t survive very well, for one thing!
The principal at my high school is Houston is going (I read about it on Facebook - otherwise I wouldn’t have known). They did a story about her on the local ABC news station so I suspect she’s doing more than just going to sit in a big crowd with millions of other people… that’s not exactly newsworthy.
“The Pope has criticized “unfettered” capitalism and has preached against not the making of profit, but the idolatry of money and profits above other considerations.”
and preaching about helping the poor - such a strange view of christianity.
MaineLonghorn - I don’t know where you are going, but try this to figure out which subway to take. http://www.mta.info/ Trip Planner on the right hand side.
I am not going back to NYC until Sat, when all the craziness is over.
The Pope is coming??? Lol, that’s a Philly joke, as we have been hearing about this visit for months on end now. The security logistics are a complete nightmare. Business is pretty much shut down for 2-1/2 days. Philly schools are closed Thursday-Monday. Many suburban train stations will be closed and special passes are needed to ride the trains into town. Most major arteries leading into the city will be closed, as well as the bridge from New Jersey. If you live in the NJ suburbs and want to attend, you are bing told to expect to walk 5 -10 miles to get to the event, due to the bridge/road closures. If you have tickets, you are being told to get there very early, as there will be long lines at the security checkpoints. A lot of people, both in the city and in the suburbs, are getting out of dodge and going away for the week-end. Many people have been scared into staying away by the negative publicity about the massive crowds. It will be interesting now to see if the actual size of the crowd meets the projections they have been warning us about, and planning for. We will be away at parents weekend, so no Pope sightings for us!
It is kind of ironic that the cities he is visiting are coming to a grinding halt during the time he is there because one gets the sense that he would like nothing more than to wander and mingle among the everyday people going about their everyday lives.
Awesome seeing on TV Pope Francis hop in a modest little Fiat 500 at DC airport and scoot off with windows rolled down and escorted by a zillion police. How’d he squeeze his luggage too into that tiny car?
