What are some of the popular premed majors at rice?

I’m not sure I understand the question exactly. If you are simply asking: what are the most popular majors among students who plan to go to mdical school or which majors have the highest concentrations of premeds, that’s one thing. But I don’t see why it would matter.

If the question is aiming a bit deeper, and is really asking: which majors will give me the best preparation for med school, or what should I be majoring in, well let me give a word of warning.

Although most if not all of the required pre-med classes will be included in your major if you are say, a bio major, this is not a reason to do it, since the bio major contains A LOT of other classes that you don’t have to take for pre-med. So, for example (without looking at my copy of general announcements - these are approximate numbers), say there are 8 semester-long classes you need to take for pre-med. Say the bio major contains 22 semester long classes. If you were a bio major, you would have to take your 8 premed classes, plus an additional 14 classes for the bio major. BUT, if instead you were a sociology major, you would have to take 8 pre-med classes, plus an additional 11 classes for the major. So, if you are simply looking for the easy way out - bio isn’t it.

So, what should you major in? You are going to spend a lot of time on whatever it is that you choose. Try not to view your major as something that is merely a hurdle you need to jump over before med school. It is actually a part of your education that is unique and important in its own right. Your major will influence your thinking and point of view, and so you should try to pick it for the right reasons. Also, most people do well in classes that they love. So try to find the major that has the most classes that you will love. Try out a few of them first. In my first year at Rice, I took classes in Psychology, Linguistics, Sociology, English, Chemistry, Philosophy, and Biology. In my second year, I took Music, Physics, Health Sciences, and Spanish, in addition to course from departments I had already tried. You don’t need to be this extreme - but do look around a little, it was worth it for me.
In short, try to find something that fascinates you - not what will help you get into med school.

But now, I’ll try to answer the original question, based on nothing other than my personal experience (no official data or anything):

I would guess popular majors among premeds include Biology (both ecology and evolutionary, and biochemistry), Bioengineering, psychology, and maybe history, and sociology. Sociology is pretty popular with kids in Rice/Baylor especially, for reasons that I am not totally sure of.

Among majors which have a reasonably high concentration of pre-meds - which is not the same question - I would also add kinesiology, maybe, to the list above.

But there are premeds in every major (with the possible exception of architecture), so do what you love. It’s really hard to be a pre-med musi, but you could do it.

i’m a pre-med Rice/Baylor dude. i’m thinking about majoring in Cognitive Science. it sounds wicked interesting.

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

That’s what I planned to major in when I got to Rice - it wasn’t for me, but it’s pretty cool.

If I make it into Rice, I plan on majoring in biochem and psych. Unless I change one of them to bioengineering.
But this probably doesn’t help you.
