Popular Songs that SHOULD be Used in Advertising..

Sometimes, a little piece of me dies when I hear a favorite song from several years back end up in a TV commercial. I have to remind myself that most popular songs are just commodities. For the artists, the residual money only goes so far, so why shouldn’t they be enititled to one more big payday off an old song.

So rather than moan about some little piece of my youth seemingly stolen away, I thought maybe if we suggested some songs to be used in advertising we could have some control over the beast. Any ideas? Please list the song the artist and the product you’d propose it be used for.

Here’s some for starters:

Love the One You’re With - Stephen Stills - eHarmony
Harden My Heart - Quarterflash - McDonald’s
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Loomg For - U2 - Google
Up on the Roof - The Drifters - Dish Network

If you’re going to use songs to poke fun at products, the number #1 target could very likely by eHarmony:

Only the Lonely - Roy Orbison

Where the Streets Have No Name-- U2 – Mapquest
Prove it all Night --Springsteen - Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra (Sorry, Bruce!)
Losing My Religion – REM – any televangelist

Fun, Fun Fun - Beach Boys - Ford

Paint it Black - Rolling Stones - Sherwin-Williams
There is a Light that Never Goes Out - The Smiths - GE Light Bulbs
Killing Me Softly With His Song - Roberta Flack - karaoke.com
London Calling - The Clash - MCI
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack - Lasik Surgery Center
Dream On - Aerosmith - Nyquil
Every Breath You Take - The Police - Claritin
Hungry Like the Wolf -Duran Duran - Chile’s Restaurants
I Want You Back - Jackson Five - Democratic National Committee
Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley - Republican National Committee
Waiting in Vain - Bob Marley - John Kerry for President Committee
I Shot the Sheriff - Eric Clapton (or Bob Marley) - Dick Cheney Legal Fund
What I’d Say - Ray Charles - Miracle-Ear
Bring it on Home to Me - Sam Cooke - United Parcel Service
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys - Sex-Toys-R-Us

Dig, those were great!

Dig, and I thought the RNC would be better advertised by REM’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”

Those are funny and really quick witted, but I would put “It’s the End of the World as We Know it” with Al Gore and the greenies.

The Reps can have End of the World by Herman’s Hermits.

Dream, Dream, Dream, The Everly Brothers- Tempurpedic mattress.
(unless Mini decides it should be used to advertise Frette sheets).

Wake-up, Little Susie–The Everly Brothers-- Alarm Clock (any brand)
September Song–Peter, Paul & Mary-- Freshman orientation programs.

ABC- easy as 123 (jackson 5)- george w campaign
19th nervous breakdown (rolling stones)- prozac
a change is gonna come (sam cooke) - the democratic nominee in 2008
baby got back- match.com
born to run (springsteen) - nike/addidas
dont let me down (beatles) - viagra
another one bites the dust (queen) - any big monopolizing company
wanted dead or alive (americas most wanted)
who wants to live forever (queen)/you’ve changed (stephen kellogg) - plastic surgery ads

ag54–I still say it’s the RNC. The Dems might predict it; the GOP cause it–gotta give credit where it’s due.

(in fact, I saw REM in the Garden two nights after the 2004 election, and that’s the song they opened with–it’s usually an encore.)

“It’s my Party (and I’ll cry if I want to)” --the DNC

As song by Leslie’s Uncle, Al (of course you can all join in):

“It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you.”

Ironically, sung either in or out of power.

You will appreciate this, FS–when I was at University of MIchigan, back in 1980, the local station played that song for 24 hours straight after Reagan won.

Garland,

Love it! I love anyone who can make fun of themselves–that is to say, my kind of Democrats:)

Alright, I have judged the entries so far on the Digmedia LOL-Meter. And the ones that I laughed loudest were:

3: Harden my heart - McDonalds (Dadguy)

2: 19th Nervous Breakdown - Prozac (huskem55)

and, the leader so far…

1: Don’t let me Down - Viagra (huskem55)

…which I predict will be the eventual winner of the competition…

We’re Gonna Party Like it’s 1999 - arthritis meds
Love Potion #9 - Viagra
Tequila - Jose Cuervo etc.
Gonna Fly Now (Rocky theme) - any airline
Nomination #2 for any televangelist: Livin’ on a Prayer
Drive My Car - Zipcar
Thong Song - Victoria’s Secret

String of Who songs:
Bargain - Filene’s Basement, Christmas Tree Shops
Baba O’Reily - Myspace
Substitute - temp agency
Pinball Wizard - Dave & Buster’s
Magic Bus - greyhound
Boris the Spider - Terminex

May I re-nominate “Baby Got Back” for Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers?

OKay, being a Bruce fan, I’ll add a bunch more for him:

Cover Me – Bed, Bath and Beyond
The Rising – Viagra, again
Tunnel of Love – Disneyworld
Thunder Road – Weather Channel
Brilliant Disguise – Botox
Murder Incorporated – the Sopranos
Dancing in the Dark – Public Service Gas and Electric
Jungleland – Bronx Zoo
Blinded By the Light – whoever makes halogen headlights

And for a little country:

Satin Sheets - Tammy Wynette/G. Jones - Wamsutta,Martex
The Gambler - Kenny Rogers - Vegas Hotels
Take This Job and Shove it! - Johnny Paycheck - George Bush
Blame it on Mexico - George Strait - High Cost of Prescription Drugs

or

“Start me up” - Rolling Stones

If we’re on the Stones for Viagra, why not “Satisfaction?”
