Popularity of Course 12

Hi,

I’m interested in going to MIT and majoring in Course 12 (Earth/Atmospheric/Planetary Sciences), but I’m wondering how it is viewed campus-wide since it is not really one of the most popular majors. Would you say the resources available to Course 12ers are comparable to those of other majors?

How popular/doable would be a double major in Course 12 and 1-E (environmental engineering)?

Thanks!

You do realize that there’s another thread going on about this, right?

It’s a pretty specialized area (or set of areas), so no, it’s not a terribly popular major. It has a rep of being a very friendly, tight-knit, and humane department, where students get decent individual attention even if they’re not stars (and thus gets some defectors from course 8, which does not have a rep for being any of these things). I have heard people complain that some of the required classes are not offered often enough, but that is the only serious complaint I have heard.

I personally do not know any 12/1E double majors. It seems like a reasonable pairing, though. Most doubles are doable if you make steady progress and have sufficient work ethic and talent in the relevant fields. Neither major is a monstrously inflexible major with a million requirements.

really? whoops. Thanks for the informative reply, though.
