We are going to Portugal in September for a week long bike tour. That part of the trip is all planned out. I was wondering if we should add a day or two on and see? The tour starts and ends in Lisbon, goes to Evora, Vila Vicosa, Estremoz, and to to Monsaraz . Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Awesome. One of my friends did a Portugal-Spain bike trip a couple years ago and came back positively raving about it. My wife is visiting Portugal this spring, as well, so I’m going to watch this thread
Algarve and Cascais on the coasts. Sintra with its castle and forests. Beautiful Portugal was where I honeymooned 30 years ago. Walked into a countess’ old house in Evora by mistake (thought it was the back of our hotel - oooops), made a new friend and the next day she took us on a tour of her farm and served us lunch. Enjoy it! September should be a nice month to go.
I would second Sintra. The castles and the charm of the old city were things we will always remember. We just returned two days ago from Portugal and would go back in a minute! A beautiful country with warm and welcoming people. We stayed in the old part of Lisbon, Nazarre, Fatima and then Sintra. Loved each location, but Nazarre was my least favorite. I really can’t say why- I just didn’t love it like I had the other locations? And I know at that point in the trip, I just felt so tired, so perhaps it really was my skewed perception? I am Catholic, so I absolutely loved visiting Fatima. Very moving for us. While we were in Sintra, there were bike groups going through. It is very hilly and with the activity on the streets, I was amazed at how the bikers made their way through. I am such a casual rider that I could never see mastering that, but I really felt they would get to see and experience so much more than we did on the buses and trains.
Ah, @jmmom - you need to ride with me! I am renting an electric bike. I am not strong enough for large hills plus I like to sight see as I bike. Did you take a train to Sintra or did you rent a car?
Cascais!
@Onward -We took the train. They seemed to run every 15-20 minutes from various points in Lisbon. The bus and train systems were very easy to navigate. As for the electric bike…I love it! Enjoy!
