Positions at iBanks vs. positions at Law Firms

What position at an iBank would be comparable to a position at a Law Firm?

Like, who at Goldman Sachs would be comparable to a Partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz? A VP? Or a Divison Head?

(I’d like to stress that I’m talking about time it takes to reach the position/amount of work/difficulty of attaining position/“prestige” of the position rather than amount of money they make.)

In terms of selectivity, I would think getting hired at WLRK in the first place is much tougher than getting hired at Goldman. Maybe Lazard and WLRK are comparable, but that’s besides the point. A partner would probably be either a VP or managing director since timing varies. Partners probably act more like managing directors, but I’m not too sure about this one.

Prestige depends on who you are talking about. The pro bono firm I worked at one summer had a bunch of summer associates and associates from places like Wachtell, Cravanth, Sullivan. One of the guys there put it in very comprehensible terms for me:

“You see bud you got a heirarchy in this corporate world: You have the CEOs of the companies on top, then you have the ibankers who are willing to go down on the CEOs and CFOs to get some work so they can mooch off some money. After that at the bottom you got the lawyers who go down on the ibankers to mooch off their fees. So when you join as a corp lawyer you know you are a third standard wh***.” I have never heard anything more articulate than that.
