Posse Launches Veterans Program with Vassar as First Partner

I went to the Posse Foundation Nominators meeting yesterday and they reminded us to get the word out that they have launched a program for vets returning home. I think it is really great and I hope that other schools get on board.

Thanks for posting this sybbie, I’m going to duplicate it for the Vet subforum.

I sent an email, but assuming I don’t get an answer over the weekend, how would the recruitment process work for veterans? Typically scholarsh for Posse are nominated by individuals in the community during their Jr or Sr year of HS, but veterans would be out of school and their traditional communities for quite some time.

What else is supposed to be involved with the program?

Thanks for any info.

Hi turtlerock,

I was actually thinking about you when I posted the link (sent you a PM). Veterans Posse will actually have their first class at Vassar fall 2013. Vassar’s first class will have 10 veterans and will originate out of the New York City office. As time goes by they hope to add more schools (hopefully the schools that they currently partner with for high school students will partner with then for Veteran’s Posse). They are also looking to expand Veterans Posse to their 8 other sites.

The recruiting process for high school Juniors is from May 16 thru June 1. However, they have not set their site up for the veterans nomination process. From what they said yesterday, Veterans can be nominated through community based organizations that serve veterans, VA, etc.

It would be safe to say that most veterans are going to be non-traditional students probably having not started college immediately after high school.

As you know the posse scholarship is a 4 year tuition scholarship. It is a leadership scholarship, so one does not need perfect scores for Posse.

Hey, thanks sybbie. I got your PM. I’ll try to follow up here with any information Posse gives me from my email I sent them.

NYC? I live in CA. I’m also a member in my local American Legion post, so maybe someone from there can nominate me if that’s how it can work if I like more information I get.

It seems like it will be a while if this program kicks off (they’d need more schools as partners and such), but maybe they’d accept veterans who are willing to transfer to their partner schools?

Thanks for all the info and invaluable help.
