I am going to be a junior in high school this fall (2015). I am taking classes at my local community college and will have completed 21 credits by the end of the spring semester (2015). I took all of the necessary high school classes from Florida Virtual School. My GPA is a 4.0 unweighted. I am involved in Civil Air Patrol and I volunteer at my local library. I am on the high school swim team and track team. I’m also on the soccer team, but it is a recreational team not affiliated with any schools. I am currently trying to start a peer tutoring program for home schoolers in my area. My SAT score is 690m, 670cr, and 790w. I have not taken any SAT subject tests yet. I plan on taking the PSAT and ACT in 2015-2016.
Do you think I have a possible chance at any Ivy League schools or any Public Ivies? It would be awesome if you could list any other colleges that you think I might have a chance at.
Hi,
I’d want to look at your SAT II and AP scores to have a better picture. Your GPA and SAT is really great, but your extracurriculars seem lackluster. Civil air patrol sounds cool, but unless you have a lot of responsibility there, an Ivy League is going to wonder why you don’t have club leadership positions or involvement in groups beyond the school/local level. Since you’re only going to be a junior this fall, you have some time to improve your resume. For Ivies and public Ivies you are really going to have to step up your extracurricular game. On your current trajectory I think you’d be shut out of Ivies but could apply to non-top-10 public schools.
Thanks @mellycx! Do you have any extracurricular suggestions for me? I’m home schooled, so I’ve had a hard time getting into any clubs at my local high school. I plan on getting involved with the community service projects at my community college, but unfortunately I have to be at least 16 to do that. My birthday isn’t until August so many volunteer opportunities are out of the question for a few more months. Also, my parents aren’t open to transporting me to different volunteer meetings and similar stuff. I’m hoping to get my driver’s license by the end of this year, so that might help me out a little bit, but then I’d have to spend a lot of time working to pay for insurance. I guess I’ll just have to see what happens.
