possible double concentration?

hey everyone, i was admitted to the class of '09 at uchicago.

i’m interested in double majoring in econ and premed, or at least take the premed req’s while doing econ.

for anyone currently attending, is this possible or will i just end up killing myself at the library (and then jumping out the library, thereby actually killing myself).

oh, and for anyone going to the overnight 21-22, did you receive any sort of confirmation? i sent my check/slip thingy out about a week ago and didn’t get any. um, hope to see you there regardless, hopefully the people there aren’t as bad as ive been reading.

thanks yo.

What are your plans for the future? I’m not sure what an econ/premed person would do. If you’re planning on doing one or the other, then major in that and take the requirements of the other. I don’t know if you’d need to major in that situation, but you could. If you plan on a career with both involved, then I imagine it would be difficult. Chicago’s premed program is supposedly killer.

id like to do medicine, but econ would be an incredible backup; plus, i’m interested in both fields.

does chicago even offer a premed major? i was thinking of maybe doing the econ major, take the premed reqs (just a year and a half of chem and a year of bio considering my ap credits). is this doable? wouldn’t this also cover a lot of the core reqs for uchic?

i could then apply to med school, and if that doesn’t work out–either academically or financially, since my parents are nearing retirement–just concentrate on econ and get a stellar job, considering chicago’s reputation.

either way, really, would be just fine with me.

oh and the real problem is that i’m turning down a 7 year BA/guarenteed MD program for uchicago.

why?
um, because it’s chicago, and i want to do more with my undergrad than prepare for medical school, and i think i actually believe the whole “life of the mind” shpiel and i would freaking love to live it.

trouble is, now i have to justify taking out about 220 thousand in loans to pay for med school in the future, both to myself and to the rents, which is why i need to either do ridiculously well and make a great med school, and/or leave myself an out with a solid (well, more than solid obviously) other concentration.

thanks.

sabreblade, Chicago, like many of its peers, does not offer a pre-med major. Why? because medical school admissions requirements can be met in a variety of ways. So, it is straightforward to be an econ major at Chicago AND meet pre-med requirements.

If you want some true “professional” adivce, go to the pre-med web site and email one of the advisors.

You may not even need to double-major if you take the right electives…my cardiologist has a degree in Economics.

Just so you know, sabreblade, U Chicago offers a BA/MD program (sort of) where you can apply to their medical school your second year. :)

Agree with jpps in that you don’t need a major in a biosciences field, but you do have to satisfy basic medical school requirements, which include a year to two years study of organic chem, bio, chem, etc which basically covers half of the requirements for a sciences major, so people do that. So, in short, there are a lot of requirements for both majors; I believe somewhere in a previous thread, a applicant e-mailed an admissions counselor at Chicago, and was advised that, while possible, majoring in two such different majors with such different requirements would be quite stressful especially considering Chicago’s reputed rigor and the Core for the first two years.

Oh as a add-on, some people do not major in the sciences and go to med school, but usually do some sort of post-bac study for a year or a semester to satisfy any outlying med school requirements. So, if you really want it, very possible, though in this option, consideration of an extra 20-40 grand for tuition.

when I did the overnight last week, my host was an international studies major on the pre-med track and seemed fine as far as handling the load [she’s currently working on meeting her chem requirements but doesn’t foresee any problems with the “extra load”].

thanks for all the responses, i really appreciate it.

i realize that trying to satisfy both the reqs for an econ major and for med school would be pretty stressful, but i think i can pass out of a lot of the reqs with ap credit; i can pass out of a semester of chem, a year of calc, and a year of physics, so it shouldn’t be so bad.
