My D is a junior just starting to think about colleges. She mentioned something today and I am wondering if it could possibly make for a good essay topic.
Last year, she stressed out about grades and her GPA. Her sister was a senior and was applying to selective colleges so there was a lot of college/GPA talk going on at home.
She had a difficult English teacher who taught it more like a philosophy class. She deemphasized grades and put the emphasis on learning for learnings sake. This resonated with my D who has adopted that philosophy this year.
Today she told me that she no longer cares about her gpa. She is going to school with the sole purpose to learn. Because of this, she is so much happier and is not freaking out over grades like many other juniors are doing. She told me something she learned in apush and said that in a year, she wouldn’t remember her grade on the test but what she learned was so interesting that she thought she’d always remember it.
Her grades are exactly the same as last year, four A’s and 2 B’s in her honors/AP classes. But she is so much more relaxed and happy to go to school each day.
Would this new approach to learning make an interesting essay topic?
