Hi! I have a possible theme or idea I would like to write about for the first essay on the personal statement. It revolves how I come from a country (Ethiopia, Africa) that lacks in the technology that we have here in the United States. I plan to connect that to how I would like to become a computer scientist who hopes to work in Silicon Valley for one of the big companies. Is this a good idea? When I first thought of it, it seemed like a good topic but now I feel as if it is too cliché/generic. I would love some feedback. Thanks.
I do not think that your plan is, in fact, too cliche. It highlights your unique background and clearly shows how that has influenced your “aspirations,” as the UC prompt says. It has the foundation for a structured and impactful essay. To avoid becoming generic, simply avoid the use of overused elements (ex: listing accomplishments, sounding overly proud, writing in the passive voice, etc).
I am in the process of writing the UC personal statements as well. A site that has been helpful for me is called Essay Hell. If you are looking for some specific ideas and advice, check it out. One of my favorite articles regarding “boring” essays is this one: http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2015/10/waving-the-red-flag-on-college-application-essays.html.
