I was accepted into both UC Davis and UC Berkeley. But I’m stuck deciding between the two schools. I have reasons to go to Berkeley, but I love the atmosphere of Davis much better. Money is definitely one thing that will help me make my decision, and currently, Davis is offering less scholarship money than Berkeley (3,700-ish vs. 4,400-ish). Is it possible to contact the school and ask for more money? If Davis offers more money than Berkeley, then I’ll definitely be able to choose Davis.

I’ve heard of privates giving more money… one of my friends got into a private college, but couldnt go because of financial issues (her house burnt down senior year D:<). Her guidance counselor/teacher/principal (forget which one) called the office to negotiate, and they offered her more money.

Not sure how it is for UCs though… (privates have more money and UCs are going through budget cuts, etc)… did you get regents scholarship? Regents is 7,500 a year… I’m surprised since you got into berkeley w/ scholarship and didnt get regents for davis. Is there an appeal for regents? XD

:( my advice would be to ask your guidance counselor. maybe they can make a call to davis and ask on your behalf. or call the financial aid office and explain the situation.

$700 shouldn’t be determining where you go to college.

This.

Did you already turn in your FAFSA? I think priority deadlines are over, but you could still turn them in if you haven’t already.

Also, tell me if I’m wrong, but it seems like your heart’s already set on Davis…
Also, if you’ve had an extenuating circumstance that affected the amount of money you have for school, you could probably mention that to one of the UCD counselors. Also, there are thousands of untapped grants and scholarships out there based on race, sex, merit, etc. Just look around! I’m sure you’ll be able to get more money.

What major are you in for by the way?

Yes, I did complete and submit a FAFSA. On the night that it first opened up (New Year’s).

And well, to be honest, it really isn’t me that the money is convincing. Yes, my heart is set on Davis, but my parents… Yea, “prestigious school” and all that stuff. So yea, that $700 doesn’t really matter to me… But apparently, to my parents, it does.

But yeah, thanks for the help. :]

Oh, and I’m majoring in Chemical Engineering.

@AndyVN

I can see where your parents are coming from. UC Berkeley’s Chemical Engineering program is always in the Top 5 (Number 3 this year), as Davis is… not so much.

It might be a good time to look ahead into the future, 5 - 10 years from now. What do you see yourself doing? If you’re positive it’ll be within the field of chemical engineering, I’d probably recommend you go to UCB as they’ll provide you with the resources and the prestige to give you a head start in your field.

However, I’ve also heard that undergrad is not as important as grad school.
My Econ teacher graduated from UCSC and headed off to Yale Law School after graduating. UCB is definitely has more “prestige” than Davis, but it’s also time for you to think about yourself. If Davis is the environment that will help accelerate your learning, and it is the best match for you, then go there.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope that you’ll make the right decision.

I’m headed to Davis next year actually, so maybe I’ll see you there.

Definitely go where you want to go, not based on a ranking. Quite a few students try a rigorous curriculum at berkeley and end up changing majors due to the stress. If you like Davis more you’ll likely apply yourself more and succeed more. If you’re going to grad school this point is even more relevant as undergrad has minimal impact on grad school acceptances. The only exception to this is top law schools which tend to like to accept within the ivy league.

Dear Andy,
I feel that if they don’t give you the sufficient funds at Davis you should just go all East Side on their ass and demand more money. If that doesn’t work just go to Cal with your buddy Amador.

Yours Truely,
Eric, Calvin,Denise and Amador

OP, you got a lot more than what I received from Davis (a mere $650 lol), opposed to what UCSB offered me (I got regents so pretty much full ride). However, I still chose Davis, because it was the school I can see myself in. Don’t go to a school based on minor factors. Cal and Davis are both good schools, choose the one that fits you more (personally).
