Possible to get into Bio1AL?

So I don’t have my TeleBears for next semester til April 30th (I was a spring admit, and by the time my FPF grades rolled over, they already assigned me this ****tyass appointment …) and I am a (NOT PREMED) MB major who is freaking out about my lower divs.

So, basically, is there any chance (with my appointment date) to get Bio1AL & Chem 3B? And if not, does Bio1AL let in anyone through waitlist or petition or whatever?

I am really desperate :(

You shouldn’t be taking Bio 1A/L and Chem 3B/L at the same time unless you are a masochist. Wait for Chem 3B/L for Spring '11

Phase 1 Bio 1AL. I know people that have got into 1AL during phase 2. At some point at the end of phase 1, they kick out the people who are not qualified for the course, so that opens up a decent amount of room.

Okay thanks about the Bio1AL info … however, my phase II is kinda crap too so I don’t know how much it’ll help.

In regards to Bio1A + Chem3B – they’re the only 2 “real” classes I plan to take anyway (the other 3 units are just filler to meet the minimum unit requirements)

…assuming I get them, of course. ■■■.

If you are planning for your third semester (FPF plus spring) then you have lots of flexibility still. MB requires two calculus, chem 1a, chem 3a, chem 3b, physics, stats, 15 units of humanities, bio 1a and bio 1b. Are you really down to the last two classes, Chem 3B and Bio 1A? Is these just the specific courses you discussed with your advisor before getting the code for the semester? Go back if you are worried and work out some alternative course sequences. Odds are that you will get into at least one of the two even with that telebears slot, although you might be sweating on a waitlist for a while.

Shoot for either chem or Bio 1A, but you can also take Bio 1B, since it is not sequential with 1A. Neither class (chem 3b/3bl or bio 1al) is near full yet, but if the worst happens you have plenty of other obligations to work through.

Most people get one particularly *** telebears appoint - the next one is likely better, just be a bit flexible. Have a plan but also be able to juggle around the elements to go with the flow.

You should not be considering taking 1A/L and 3B/L at the same time regardless what your other coursework is. You will be in a world of pain if you go through with it.

Well, I actually am just about done with all my lower divs for MB (I really worked my ass of this semester and took Stats, Chem1A, and Physics 8A, in addition to taking Calc1B during FPF, and I am also taking Chem 3A/L during summer) the only three left are 3B/L, Bio1A and yes, Bio 1B.

However, 1B is not a prereq for any of my upper divisions, which is why I’d rather just leave it hanging til I can fit it in somewhere and would prefer to take 1A first (so I can move onto MCB102 and all of those “Bio 1A required” classes)

If you have AP credit, don’t bother taking Bio1B. Most useless class ever and harder to get an A in than Bio1A for me at least.

I have to take it: CNR requires you to take all your lower division Bio’s sadly.

i’m curious about the answer to this question too - let’s just disregard the classes and actually mention whether it’s possible to get into 1AL with a late telebears, or do you just have to hope for phase 2?

wait aren’t there over 300 seats in the class right now?
and why would you have to hope for phase 2? if it’s full by your phase 1 time, just waitlist it. you’ll probably get in.

Yeah – when does the “cleaning out” of non-qualified people begin for 1AL?

Actually, @Flutterfly, it’s one of those stupid things where the lecture doesn’t match the labs, so although the lecture has like 500 spots, almost all the labs are already filled (the number enrolled hasn’t been updated, but if you actually click on the “see current enrollment” you’ll see that they’re all full)

the cleaning out begins at the end of phase 1.

Biology 1B is not a useless class, it might not be interesting to flutter, but understanding biology at levels larger than the cell is important. Also Microbial Biology requires or recommends some plant biology (or so I’ve heard), so you will need Biology 1B as a prereq for those classes whenever you get around to them. Also, upper division genetics courses require Biology 1B as you will need to have some basic understanding of population genetics.

I wasn’t saying that Bio 1B is useless – it is just less pressingly needed than Bio 1A, as 1A is the prereq for all of my “required” upper division courses.

If you can skip it, you’ve already taken AP Biology and gotten a 4 or 5. Unless you’re specifically interested in plants, evolution, or ecology, that’s enough of a background and retaking Bio1B is pretty useless. Especially the labs - do we really need to count beans for 3 hours to understand how evolution works?

^When I was UGSIing Bio 1B last spring, they said that they are in the process of applying for grants to completely redo the evolution labs. In the near future, the labs will incredibly different.

-checks-
Sigh, even the 6:30-9 labs are filling up.

Also, is there a reason there are only odd-numbered labs?

Are they going to open any more during adjustment period?

HAHAHA @ flutter. I swear I always cry on the inside every time in Bio 1B labs because it is such a waste of my life. Bio 1B labs are basically a concept that can take 2 minutes to explain with 2 hours and 58 minutes of useless fluff. From what I gather like 95% of the people I know think Bio 1B is useless and boring. I think I learned more about evolution and ecology in HS biology than Bio 1B, which is kinda sad IMO.
