Possible to teach myself math?

Recently I’ve discovered electrical engineering. I never realized how interesting it is and after going to trade school to be an electrician, I’m saddened that I never discovered this because the main reason for becoming an electrician was the interest in electronics and circuits.
The big problem, is math. I was one of those high school kids who drifted away from positive friends, and was stuck with negative ones. Drugs soon clouded my attitude and my academics fell drastically. I thought I would never need to use math so I just didn’t try. I was too focused on playing World of Warcraft and smoking weed.

I barely passed algebra 1, but I recently got an algebra book at the library and am picking up where I left off.

What I’m wondering is; is it possible to teach myself advanced algebra, leading up to calculus just from studying textbooks?
Would enrolling into community college be a better idea? Getting an associates of science, then transferring to a college with a good EE program or possible a EECS program ( electrical engineering and computer science). Also considering military for help with college, and maybe even a better insight to what I’m going to do with my life.

Just wondering guys thanks for your feedback.

Also I’m 21, class of 2012 and live in Ohio.

I think it would be possible to self teach algebra, but I’m not too sure about calc. I’m in calculus right now, and if I didn’t have my teacher, I would be very lost.
I think enrolling into a community college would be a good option, but you need to keep your grades up to transfer to another college with a good EE or EECS program, since engineering is a hard major to get into for all schools in general.
My uncle actually joined the army and went to UC Berkeley as an EE major, and he had no debt since the government paid his tuition.

I wish you luck! your background/story is very inspirational
