So I have an interview question. It’s for a Columbia Alumni Interview so I’m putting it here because I didn’t know where else to put it.

This may sound like a dumb question but here it goes. My interview is at a Starbucks and because I don’t have a car my dad is going to drop me off and pick me up. Because I don’t know when exactly the interview will end, would it be alright if at the end I called my dad and told him to come? And what if he’s farther away and it will take him a while to get there (the place is a bit far from my house)? Does the interviewer leave and I can stay there?

I know this may seem like a stupid question but I wanted to know the protocol so that it’s not awkward when the interview is over. Thanks!

I’ve heard from other posts though that they can last longer? So should I just tell my parents to wait…I think that seems like the best thing right now.

so official protocol is 45 mins for an interview. however, that is just a guideline. I think it’s absolutely fine to have your dad come pick you up after the interview, alums are told specifically to be prepared to welcome questions from parents after an interview, they are after all important decision makers. Make sure your parents aren’t physically present in the vicinity at any point during the interview, like sitting at a different table and looking at you at Starbucks, but it’s totally cool for them to pick you up and even talk to your interviewer. I’m very much prepared to meet my interviewees’ parents, and don’t mind it at all.

Geez relax. When your interview ends, you call your dad. You wait until he comes – 5 minutes or 20 minutes. Your interviewer isn’t going to awkwardly stay with you. He/she will have already left. What then is the worry?

@OP: Well I had my interview today…it was approximately 40 minutes…but now that I think of it, we started about 5 minutes earlier than we planned to. So yeah it’ll be 45 minutes or pretty close to that. Trust me there really isn’t THAT much things to talk about. By the time 45 minutes come by you’ll be done saying everything you have.
