So there’s this post doc that started working last fall. She barely showed up, and when she did, she would be late. After winter break, she outright disappeared. She’s not answering her phone. I talked to one of the grad students, and she said she saw the post doc at the airport when she came back from winter break. Needless to say, she won’t be working in the lab any longer

This person doesn’t have family around here, and I’m guessing doesn’t have a lot of friends here either. She lives alone.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had this happen in their lab, because I find this really bizarre.

***** happens. Most likely something occurred in her personal life that precluded her from continuing on in the program. Not bizarre - just life.

Assuming this post-doc is an international, we’ve had a couple people leave to visit home for the winter for a month or so and then randomly have visa issues that have lasted a month or two. These people have always been in touch with our PI though, so it’s strange that the person in question isn’t getting in contact with anyone.

Cell phones aren’t the best media to keep up with because if the phone dies without a charger, there’s little-to-no way to get in touch with the person. I would suggest electronic correspondence like e-mail, facebook, twitter, etc. that could be more direct and a little easier to access.

People burn out. It’s unfortunate, but it happens.

One of my friends who entered grad school with me burned out after a quarter or so, left for a few years, got a job and felt a lot better, then came back last year. She just passed her quals and is doing great now.

She came to the states at a very young age, so she’s either a permanent resident or US citizen. Her hometown is in the US

Burning out isn’t in the cards, because she barely showed up last semester. What could she be so stressed out about?

I don’t really know her, because I don’t work with her. She really p1ssed off my grad student because after she left, he had to carry her weight, and he would’ve burnt out big time without my help.

And like I said, I talked to someone who saw her at the airport before winter break ended. Maybe she went back, who knows.
