hi~
i’m applying to exeter for my gr11 year. I saw many posts about the importance of hooks in the admission proces. Is being good at math contests (i.e. Mathcounts State Champion and other equivalent) a strong hook? I know exeter has a really good math program, and I’d definitely not one of the best math students there. I’d also expect lots of math-nerd-type applicants to exeter, which would make my hook look less prestigious.
Also, i’m not a US citizen (complicated story here) and need quite a bit of FA. would that affect my chance a lot? other than that, my EC’s,interview and recs are good. my essays are average, but they show my passion in math, which might be interesting to adcom.
Can anyone chance/comfort/redeem me? i’d be really nervous before March 10!
Thanks!

I don’t really know, but on that note

would guitar be considered a hook for a school like milton that takes a lot of pride in it’s jazz band?

Welcome to CC Nirvanatear!

Math contest success may not be a traditional hook but it is certainly a feature that may cause the AdComs to look twice at your application, so that’s a good thing.

On the topic of being an international in need of FA, although I don’t know this from personal experience, it’s been said many times that this puts you into an even more competitive pool. But that really isn’t what you should be thinking about right now. You are who you are! I’m sure you’ve done the best you can to present yourself well through your applications, so now you should sit back, read the thread about how to occupy yourself until March 10 (read a book, someone said “write a book”, watch TV, chat on AIM, take up cribbage or skiing, whatever), and realize that it is officially out of your hands. Good luck with the waiting game!

Roses & Clovers: you should get in touch with Mr. Sinicrope, the director of Milton’s Jazz program. Send him a tape of your playing if you can manage it. He is very approachable, and while guitar ability is not a traditional hook, it’s one of those things (like math contest success) that may be just what the school is looking for.

they sent me some things about the arts at milton and I e-mailed him with a few questions I had

thanks so much
