Post your own state's college reputations'

Washington

The other posts are pretty accurate. This doesn’t include every college. I’m only writing about the ones I’ve heard something (mostly stereotypes) about or have seen something of myself.

That being said, here’s what people in the suburbs of western Washington think.

University of Washington: Most students want to go there. It’s a good school, with a good premed program. Also, upon going there for UW World Language Day, I discovered UW likes languages as well (a guy talked for 20 minutes about their language program). Seattle is amazing, as a bonus. Lots of Husky fans. Pretty campus.

Washington State University: UW’s sports rival. Not as good academically as UW (you should hear what Husky fans have to say… My APUSH teacher regularly dissed it).

Western Washington University: People like the fact it’s close to Canada, and they like to take advantage of Canada’s lowered drinking age…

Evergreen State College: Hippie school-- very liberal and lots of pot.

Pacific Lutheran University: Good college, in a not-so-nice part of Tacoma. A teacher once said (in jest), “Anyone with a pulse can get in.” An exaggeration, but applying shouldn’t be too stressful if you’re a good student. They’re music hall (Lagerquist) is gorgeous and amazing to sing in. They have a good music program.

University of Puget Sound: Good music program. The initials are UPS-- 'nuff said :D

Again, a lot of that is stereotypes and just the attitude of those at my school :)

Yes, I know there’s been a ton of Michigan posts but I have a slightly different view.

U of M- Ann Arbor: Many people there are pretty snooty and they tend to put themselves on a higher plateau than they are on. Many high school students are dead set on UMich because of its reputation and then visit it and no longer wish to attend. Basically, not the school it once was.

U of M- Dearborn: Very good for computer programming. A good school for commuters and grad students. Fairly underrated because of Ann Arbor.

Michigan State: Very underrated. Admissions are becoming tougher and it’s becoming less of a party school. The residential colleges are awesome and the campus is gorgeous!

Eastern Michigan: A good teaching school, but that’s about it. My sister goes there and it’s not the safest school in the world. It has LOTS of notorious security issues. Many people use it as a stepping stone to MSU or UMich.

Western & Central Michigan: Very big party schools. The 2nd choice for those who couldn’t get into MSU.

Grand Valley State: A smaller college whose popularity is soaring. It’s a party school, but not that bad. I’m not too familiar with it but I know a ton of people going there.

Wayne State: A VERY underrated university IMO. Admissions are open, but it has an amazing med and theater program. It’s in a very nice section of Detroit too which many are surprised to hear. It’s for premed students who can’t afford UMich or MSU.

Albion: A very small LAC. It’s pretty expensive and is pretty big on Greek life. Reviews are mixed. It’s a good school if you take advantage of it.

Kzoo: Another VERY underrated LAC. Its popularity is growing but it’s still relatively unknown. Their K-Plan is a very big hit though with Mich students who want a liberal arts education but don’t want Albion.

Hope College: A small underrated Christian college. Many people go there who don’t want to go to the more conservative Cornerstone. I think it has an awesome volleyball team too.

Hillsdale: Same as Hope.

Michigan Tech: A good school for engineering, but not much else.

Oakland: Kind of like Eastern, but a step down. Good for local students who want to take a class over the summer.

Schoolcraft Community College: Really good for locals. I’ve heard it has an awesome culinary program too.

That’s all I’m really familiar with…

NY-with the exception of binghamton, stony brook, and geneseo SUNY schools have miserable reputations

“U of M- Ann Arbor: Many people there are pretty snooty and they tend to put themselves on a higher plateau than they are on. Many high school students are dead set on UMich because of its reputation and then visit it and no longer wish to attend. Basically, not the school it once was.”

Romanigypsyeyes, your parents/close friends wouldn’t happen to be Spartans would they? LOL! Unfortunately, you are partly correct. Not that Michigan isn’t the school it once was. In that regard, Michigan is still as good as it always was. However, Michigan, like anything that is highly regarded and hyped, sometimes will fall short of expectations. When you grow up hearing how great something is, it is hard to live up to the hype and expectations.

I agree that MSU is HIGHLY underrated

Alexandre, actually, we’re all Michigan fans. Lmao! I will forever be a wolverines fan, but I simply cannot stand the school.

parent2noles, I am definitely feeling a little deja vu after reading your conversation these last two pages. It’s very similar to a discussion we had a while back where I pointed out you blatant bias for the FSU education. I am glad to see some other people from that area are trying to educate you on the academics of FSU. It is getting tiresome to read about you saying that UF and FSU are comparable universities, when it just isn’t true. Maybe on the graduate level it’s different, but for undergrad UF is light years ahead with academics/sports/prestige. That’s just a fact.

^^^^I’m definitely feeling a little deja vu with these types of posts. There’s always some bitter UF supporter who feels the need to put down FSU. OK we get it, you don’t like FSU. Time to get over it. When you enter the real world after graduation, you’ll probably be working along side with FSU grads. Then you’ll realize how silly these “flame” posts are.

On the contrary, it is the bitter and biased support of FSU that I have seen on CC that has infuriated me. I personally couldn’t less about either school, but I am tired of parent2noles making FSU out to sound like some kind of Ivy league equivalent. I have the out-of-state view of the school, and UF trumps FSU. Simple as that. I am not saying FSU is by any means a bad education, I just am tired of reading the skewed version of the truth getting posted.

Here’s another NC one, just because I can  (and to break up the Florida hatin’)

UNC - Most “above average” students go here, but more and more extremely smart kids are going (atleast from what I can tell as a graduating senior this year). Cheap tuition, crazy fans, but too much light blue for me. Fantastic basketball team (unfortunately).

 • UNC Wilmington: Party.
 • UNC Pembroke: Dumb people.
 • UNC Charlotte: Party/drugs.
 • UNC Greensboro: Probably the 2nd most “respected” UNC school. A lot of artsy-fartsy kids go there but they have a really good teaching program, and the faculty is really nice. Still, almost anyone can get in.

Duke - You either love Duke or you hate it - you have to take a side if you live here or you’re just not from NC :stuck_out_tongue: People look at you and go “wow!” when you tell them you’re going there/got in/know someone who goes. Obviously known for its basketball team/Coach K/Cameron Crazies. Football leaves much to be desired. Lacrosse team got an unfair rap. Kids are rich and pretentious. Every other person is Asian.

Appalachian State - Partttay. Great football team, though. It’s been gaining popularity because of this. Still a big party, though. Boone is apparently a great town, though.

Western & East Carolina - Party schools on opposite ends of the state (moreso for ECU)

Wake Forest - Preppy, rich white kids who like to party. Most popular team for middle aged rich white people in the area (I live really close to WF).

NC State - The girls are easy. That was harsh… let’s see. The engineering school is fantastic and the school is not hard to get into - a lot of “average” to “below average” kids go here. A handful of extremely intelligent students choose to attend, usually for sciences and engineering. Has a good football team (I think?) and basketball isn’t too shabby. Campus is extremely ugly. Full of red bricks - the main area is called the “brickyard.”

Elon - Lesser known, but known for being a good school. Somewhat difficult to get into, and a lot of above average kids go here. Seems to attract a lot of OOSers.

“Alexandre, actually, we’re all Michigan fans. Lmao! I will forever be a wolverines fan, but I simply cannot stand the school.”

That’s a contradiction in terms. How can you be a die-hard fan and hate the school at the same time?

^ Yes, I know :). I mean that I am forever a U of M sports fan, but I don’t want to attend the school. It makes sense in my head…

“I agree that MSU is HIGHLY underrated”

Imo, most of the public institutions are underrated. Just look at Berkeley.

Berkeley has a very good reputation

Even though a bunch of people have already done Ohio, I want to give it a try, too. :p

Ohio State - People around here think OSU is the cream of the crop. It’s a HUGE school, big on sports, it’s where all the kids who are kind of smart go.

Ohio U - Party and drinking school. I hear it’s good for journalism, but not much else. It’s in the middle of nowhere in Athens, OH.

Kent State - Around here they say “can’t read, can’t write, Kent State”. This is where all the kids who practically failed high school go to spend another 4 years getting drunk every night.

Youngstown State - Practically community college. Everyone says YSU means “You Screwed Up” meaning that you are too dumb to get in anywhere else. Even Kent is better than YSU.

Oberlin and Kenyon - Ohio’s decent colleges. Both are LACs. I know more about Oberlin, it’s in the middle of nowhere but near to Cleveland, and probably the best school in Ohio. Kenyon is pretty good, the valedictorian of a nearby school is going there.

Ohio Northern - An okay school. Mostly kids who didn’t get into Ohio State but don’t want to stoop so low as to go to, say, Kent State.

Bowling Green, Mount Union, University of Akron - all about the same level, a step above YSU or Kent. Kids can feel okay about going here even if they got straight C’s through high school.

U Cincinnati - Same as above, basically, but I put it separately because to my understanding, it’s in the middle of the ghetto. One of my friends went there for nursing, and she was half-way smart.

John Carroll - One of the better Ohio schools, which isn’t saying that much. Maybe just a little better than the above.

There are a lot of other schools in Ohio, but these are the ones I hear about most. At my school, for the most part, super-smart kids go way far away, the next tier of kids go to Ohio State, and down from there. Oberlin and Kenyon are pretty good schools, but it seems like very few people go there (probably due to the small size).

Just to wrap it up, here’s how my school’s classes usually end up: 10% go to Ohio State, 45% to Youngstown State, 40% to Kent State, and 5% to the other Ohio Schools. Every year we only have 2-3 students go to top colleges. :frowning: It’s a real townie atmosphere around here - me and my friends in my grade are going to break the mold and send like 10 kids out of Ohio, let’s hope.

Well, that’s my 2 cents anyway. ;)

I forgot Case Western! I accidentally left off one of Ohio’s half-decent schools!

But Case Western is pretty good for science-oriented nerdy kids. I hear the social life is lacking, and the kids there are kind of weird, but if you want to go to school in Ohio, Case Western is prob. one of your best bets.

highhopes…

If you see an SAT question in the grammar section that starts (as your did at the end of your post):

“Me and my friends are …”

remember you heard it here first – that’s the sentence with the grammatical error!

What about Miami highopes?

Ohio State is a top college, and I don’t even like the buckeyes. As an alum of another big ten school, I feel like OSU would be a great deal for in-state students. Honestly, I just think pretentious people are kind of pathetic. It sounds like you are, but sorry If I’m mistaken. I guess it is pretty telling about your high school that 85% of your grade either goes to youngstown state or kent state…

I live in Ohio too and I’d say that about that many people go to ysu and kent from my school, as well. All of our top students just get full rides to ysu. I’d say like 3 people go out of state every year.
