Post your own state's college reputations'

Ohio…in kind-of-an-order

Oberlin: excellent LAC, known for being verrrry leftist/hippie/indie/hipster, top-notch music program

2 (tie). Case Western: great engineering, great med school, not-so-great social life (friends who go there say that on-campus scene is pretty lame)

2 (tie). Kenyon: Small, artsy, good LAC basically in the middle-of-nowhere. Known for its excellent writing program.

Ohio State: hands-down the best public school in Ohio. Some will say Miami, but I really don’t think that’s true. OSU has very good sciences/engineering/business/poli sci and a great, selective honors program. It is also HUGE (The second-biggest in the country I think) and known for having a pretty active party scene.

Miami: Solid school, very homogeneous (like 95% white) and preppy/wealthy. Greek life is huge here.

Denison: pretty good LAC, known for being a bit wealthy/midwest preppy

Ohio U: Biggg party school, but has a very good journalism program. In the middle of nowhere

8 (tie). Ohio Northern: Middle-of-nowhere, very good pharmacy program. Didn’t get into OSU, or got admitted into pharmacy program.

8(tie). Dayton: pretty good Catholic school

Marietta: tiny little college but decent

11 (tie). Akron: Alright…not much more to add

11 (tie). Toledo: ditto

Kent State: “Kent read, Kent write, Kent remember what I did last night”…good nursing/teaching programs, though…its activist reputation faded away along with the 1970s

Bowling Green: Ok…good teaching program

Youngstown: Ok…blah city though

Cleveland State: Used to be pretty bad, getting much better

Cincinnati: Oh boy…the people from my school who have 300s on their SAT sections go here. HOWEVER: their music/theatre conservatory is EXCELLENT. CCM is in a league all its own.

Virginia

UVa- you either love it or hate it. The people who love will do anything to go, while the people who hate it think it’s full of a bunch of stuck-up rich kids. UVa is known as the school where all the instate ivy rejects go.

William and Mary- has a stigma of not being as good as UVa, which isn’t always true. More southern than most large VA schools and tends to have a VERY HIGH suicide rate. Their sports suck too.

JMU- party school with good academics. It has a really bad male:female ratio (I think it’s something like 60-65% female). JMU has actually started to gain a lot of ground and is considered to be as good or, in some cases, better than Tech.

Tech- Great engineering program. Good sports. Around my community, it’s seen by many as a backup to JMU, UVa, and W&M. The food is amazing too:)

Radford- STDs, STDs, and more STDs.

Sweet Briar/ Hollins- both are all-female. Seen as schools for preppy white girls.

U of Richmond- rich kids from the north go there in droves. Average academics and their sports aren’t very good.

VCU- more for the artsy kids. It’s in a really bad part of town and while the campus is relatively safe, the city isn’t. Basically for kids who can’t hack it at one of the major VA schools.

Longwood- small school. Average academics. Out in the middle of nowhere.

VSU- Very few people from my school go there. If you’re white, you will get mucho scholarships because you will be a minority there. Their marching band marches a la the movie Drumline- I’m not going to lie… it’s pretty sweet

Darn Miami, I knew I forgot something important. :p

And I knew someone was going to call me out on my “me and my friends” error. Darn being unable to edit posts.

But I agree with mochamaven’s assessment, too.

But seriously, DON’T go to Youngstown State. I live less than an hour away from there and the city is just a dump, not that the school is much better. It just seems like a miserable experience.

And to jec-- I certainly don’t think Ohio State is a bad school - it’s actually pretty darn good - but I just resent the fact that people in my town don’t think there is anything to be found outside of Ohio. :(

NC native…will be at UNC in the fall…

“Duke is our evil twin and NC State is our ■■■■■■■■ cousin”

lol (10char)

Adding to VA’s list…

Mary Washington- small school, good education (in the same league as JMU and Virginia Tech)

George Mason- their admission requirements are going higher…they are higher than VCU & Radford but below JMU and VT, mostly a commuter school, about a 20 min. drive from D.C.

Maine!
We have waaay more colleges. I’m just too lazy…

University of Maine system: Large schools for our state, good education, not a lot of prestige, easy to get into (especially USM)
Thomas College: Too expensive for a so-so school
University of New England: Good school, liberal, EXPENSIVE, focuses on biology a lot
NESCOM: Best school for radio and communications in the state
Colby: One of the three LAC’s here, the least difficult to get into, the most fun, best sports, actually not considered very prestigious around here, I’m not sure why
Bowdoin: One of the hardest schools in the state to get into
Bates: THE hardest school in the state to get into. Haha.

apparently Carleton college is prestigious.

But I visited it, and it had close to no good programs, and was essentially a craphole

Oh, and College of the Atlantic here in Maine is for those people who want to have class outside in the woods. It’s very…granola. No sports teams or anything.

Actually to add to Ohio and to YSU, if you are decent at music Dana School of Music is pretty good there. I mean, nothing prestigous or anything, but the people are decent and one of the directors is the most fascinating guys you will ever meet. I just wouldn’t advise dropping everything and running off to Youngstown. The city is very dead but I know lots of people who make YSU work for them.

Alabama:My 2 cents…
UA - Beautiful campus, easy to get into, backup school for many, first choice for die hard Bama fans. National rankings are respectable.
Auburn - Has rep. as top tier in the state…unless you are a die hard Bama fan then you can absolutely never consider it an option. National rankings suffer due to lower alumni/endowment funds than Bama. Getting much harder to get into.
UAB - Good School especially for those interested in medicine and health related fields.

^ That’s true about YSU’s music school, but I can’t imagine why ANYONE would EVER want to live in Youngstown. It’s probably the most depressing place I’ve ever visited.

I’m from this little state we call Michigan…

^ Yay MICHIGAN!!!

Ohio-

OSU - Good education, basically everyone’s opinion is that it’s frickin huge. People generally love it or hate it, and if you aren’t a Buckeye fan you are immediately ostracized.

Ohio University - Either OSU rejects, people who can’t stand enormous universities, band geeks that play woodwind instruments (OSU (which doesn’t march woodwinds) and OU are consistently ranked in the top ten marching bands in the nation, in varying orders), or Journalism majors. They’d love to have a sports grudge against OSU, but aren’t good enough in many sports to do so, so they settle for Miami and Bowling Green.

Miami University - Preppy to the max, Greek like crazy, and a decent education. Both Miami and Ohio U have great campuses.

Ohio Northern/Bowling Green - Decent schools, but for OSU rejects or people who hate big.

Kent Spell - Yeah, we’ve been over this one.

Oberlin - Renowned nationally and internationally for it’s music conservatory and one of the better LACs in the nation. Very artsy and liberal.

Case Western - For engineering and hard science geeks. In a bad part of town, as well. Good education, if somewhat expensive.

University of Dayton - Decent school, alright in most areas. Has a basketball team that sometimes gets places, but isn’t that special.

Antioch University - Now defunct, but Yellow Springs lives on! Set in the greatest town on earth, bar none. Hyper-liberal and way too expensive. All of this past tense and hopefully future tense.

Can’t Wright state university - For a few computer geeks (it has a nice super computer) but otherwise for rejects from anywhere.

YSU - We’ve been over this one before too. Not a #1 destination for anyone besides lame people.

Ohio Wesleyan/Kenyon/College of Wooster/Denison all good LAC’s, similar to Oberlin but without the crazy conservatory.

Florida-

This is what kids in South Florida think:

UF- Big, almost too big for some. Good for agriculture and engineering. Students have a reputation for being unfriendly. Gainesville is a horrible/boring town full of rednecks. Very country area. People say UF students like to wear jean shorts, but I don’t know if that’s really true. Most of the dorky anti-social kids in my area go there.

UM- Way too expensive. School for rich kids. Boring campus. Good for marine biology, business, and medicine. Has a really good reputation in my area. Great football team. Really smart rich kids in my area go there.

FSU- Really far from South Florida. Reputation for having good looking people (hot girls). People say Tallahassee is a fun town. Supposedly getting really tough to get accepted. Most of the cool/popular people in my area go there. Good law school, business, and arts.

UCF- Popular choice for people around here. Getting better every year. Big party school. Somewhat of a commuter school. Reputation as a place for UF and FSU rejects, but that’s not necessarily true. Every year getting tougher to get accepted. Many are turning down UF and picking UCF. Sports scene is really growing fast. Decent football team.

USF- Really ugly campus. UCF rejects. Commuter school in a bad neighborhood. Good football team. Not many from my area go there.

FAU/FIU/UNF/UWF- local schools for those who want to live at home with their parents. Also a place for people who got rejected from the other schools.

Rhode Island here

URI-Sub-Par academic with strong Ocean related and Pharmacy programs, In the middle of nowhere, But it is Rhode Island, So it is a 15 minute drive to Providence. They cut down a partying A LOT. While it is easy to get into it they will offer full-rides to smart kids.

RIC-If you want to be a teacher, this is for you.

Bryant- Nice Campus,Good MBA program,High Job placement…that it

Brown- Brown is obviously a top school…Not much of a campus though,You could easily have to walk a few block to get to some random building in the middle of the city where your class is. VERY VERY Liberal.

RISD-Best design school in the country, Offer your basic(English,Maths,Hisotry…etc) at Brown. Workload is the highest in the country

I spend a LOT of time in SoFL, and I’ve never heard this. Ever…

yeah, I’m not accustomed to agreeing with the temple kid, but I have NEVER heard this. The kids that I have met from UF were bright and far from “dorky”. It seemed like they were probably that intelligent jock that was stuffing you into a locker. I could be wrong. It could also be that you just couldn’t get in and had to go to one of the joke florida directional schools(from the sounds of it, UCF).

JEZ -

I’m FROM South Florida and about 90% of the students in my graduating class who planned on going to college applied…and for most, it was their first choice. I think someone here is just a little bitter that he couldn’t get in…
