So, I guess mine will be mainly stereotypes. I don’t know too much about the public schools. And don’t know much about what majors each school is known for…

I think I’ll start with the PRIVATE SCHOOLS:

Whitman: Very very good school. The best in Washington. It’s where the smart kids go. It’s in teeny tiny Walla-Walla, and has a beautiful campus. I also hear they have very nice dorms, and give a lot of Aid/Scholarships.

Seattle U: Uhh… It’s okay. Private Jesuit school near downtown. Some people say the campus is beautiful, but I don’t care for it. It’s far too modern for me. It’s basically where people go if they can’t get into UW or think that they’re too good for UW. The students here have a lt of pride in their school, but I think it’s in a bad way… It’s not a GO SEATTLE U pride, it’s more of WE’RE SEATTLE U, AND WE’RE BETTER BETTER THAN YOUR SCHOOL pride. Which is silly since Seattle U is pretty easy to get into…

Gonzaga: I think it’s pretty well respected. In eastern washington. Basically where the private school kids go if they want to get away from Seattle, but not too far away. I think it’s often forgetten about, and would be COMPLETELY ignored if it weren’t for the Basketball team. It’s not amazingly hard to get into, but the academics are good none the less. I’ve also heard some people say that they think of it as the snooty rich white kid school. But I’ve learned to stop taking stereotypes like that seriously, since I’ve gone to catholic school all my life and most catholic school stereotypes aren’t true.

University of Puget Sound: Don’t know much about it. It’s private and in Tacoma. I’ve barely heard of it. Maybe where kids who want to go the private school go, but don’t want the religious affiliation?

St. Martin’s: Havn’t heard of it more. Got a letter in the mail from them. They’re catholic, and teeny. I don’t know why anyone would choose St. Martin’s over Gonzaga or Seattle U…

Seattle Pacific: Really tiny, in Seattle. It’s christian, but not catholic. I’m not sure what exactly it is. I think a lot of asians go here, it has a lot of international students. I don’t really know why anyone would go here… except if they’re the religion this school is associated with.

Public Schools:

University of Washington: Most popular school in the state. Which can be seen in it’s size. 30,000+ students. Large and beautiful campus, in a pretty decent neighborhood. It’s getting harder and harder to get into. They’re getting exclusive, and look at you as a whole. While your GPA is important, they also like extra curriculars and a good essay. The academics are pretty great, and a wonderful med school. The dorms are horrible though… It’s pretty much a given that you apply here. Lots of school spirit, not just within the school, but you see Husky fans all over the state. Strong Athletics in the Pac-10.

Washington State University: Um… I don’t know what their actual academics are like, but it’s pretty easy to get into WSU. Basically if you have a 3.0+, you’re in. It’s a college town, and they love the party… or so I’ve heard. They’re mostly a joke in Western Washington…

Western Washington University: Drugs drugs booze and drugs. That’s all I really know about it. It’s super near Canada. And pretty much a safety school. I dont agree with that other person who said that it’s harder to get into than UW. That is beyong ridiculous. Western is pretty much a shoe in. My parents, who are immigrants and know very little about my different college choices, already told me they wouldn’t let me go here because it’s a party school. I hear the campus is nice though…

Central Washington University: Basically the same as Western, but even easier to get into. I looked at the stats from people who applied from my High School… the average GPA of those accepted was like… 2.75. I also here there’s a lot of drugs and partying here. So basically, it’s like Western, but worse.

Eastern Washington Univeristy: I know nothing about this school. But I know it’s pretty much a joke in my school. Simply because it’s in eastern washington, and eastern washington is a total joke to westerners.

Evergreen: Uhh… I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this school. Never even heard of a person who goes here…

Also, the person who said WWU was harder to get into than UW… they also said SPU is a Jesuit school… which it isn’t. It’s not even Catholic.

Also, on the whole WWU vs. UW thing…

Western:
26% in top 10th of graduating class
61% in top quarter of graduating class
92% in top half of graduating class

23% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher <-------
29% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
28% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
14% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
6% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 <-----Not good

U-Dub:
86% in top 10th of graduating class
97% in top quarter of graduating class
100% in top half of graduating class <—100%!!

54% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher <—54%!!!
31% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
10% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
4% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
1% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 <—Barely any…

Sorry about the SPU thing…I definitively didn’t notice that I’d written that. And I guess I wasn’t thinking clearly or something about Western…but I do hear people say that Western’s harder that UW so I was posting what they thought…(maybe my logic/lack of common sense is so twisted I should just head up there for college :P)

cherielia you haven’t heard of Evergreen? It’s a complete joke at my school.

No problem. We all make mistakes. Haha.

I’ve heard of the name, but don’t know anything about the school.
Where are you from?

Odd thing about Evergreen State…it’s in alot of college guidebooks with glowing writeups. And people are constantly recommending it on CC as an inexpensive alternative to very selective liberal arts colleges. I had the same feeling about it as M62442. Then my son told me he may want to go there, so I’ve had to open my mind a bit and try to understand more about it. I’m still not sure what I think…

UNC Chapel Hill - Awesome school, most of the best go here.
Duke - Another awesome school, but many who favor UNC don’t even apply because of the UNC-Duke rivalry.
Wake Forest - Mostly rich kids? Perceived similar to UNC but really expensive.
NC State - Mid-range school, good at engineering, veterinary science, and great design school.
Appalachian State - Easy to get in to, cold weather. Ha.
Elon - Good at random stuff.
Western, UNCW, UNCP - Easy to get into, party schools.
Eastern - STDs, and… that’s mostly it.

Maryland again…I’ll just list the ones I hear about the most

UMCP - Party school. Pretty much the university that most the kids end up attending. Usually a safety at my very competitive public HS.

UMBC - Good science school. Another safety school. A lot of kids attend UMBC as well, but not as many as UMCP. No social life and boring neighborhood.

Salisbury - Community college education without “Community College” in the name. Don’t know how true this is…haven’t bothered to check it out.

Frostburg - Is this school for real? Team has been there before over the summer. Hated everything about the campus.

Johns Hopkins - Lax is a lifestyle, anyone? I know a few lax kids go here from my school. Smart school so even more get in through high scores. ~33.3% acceptance rate over the past four years.

sselbor: anything to say about UNC Asheville?

From my observations made via visiting campuses, friends, Facebook, and stereotypes:

UC Berkeley - One of the most prestigious schools in the state if not the nation. Solid research and athletics history. School pride is oozing.

Stanford - I respect this place for its contributions to science and technology - after all Google/Cisco/Sun/Facebook/Yahoo were started or founded by Stanford grads. But of course there’s the Cal-Stanford rivalry - and their students can be devoid of class.

UC Davis - It’s in the middle of nowhere, but it’s a nice school. Famous for their agriculture and veterinary programs. Bikes everywhere, but bicycles are the original green machine - not hybrids.

Cal Poly SLO - One of the more prestigious schools in the CSU system, its engineering and Ag program is well known but it’s pretty well-rounded. The city it’s in is one of most desirable college towns in California.

San Jose State University/San Francisco State University/Cal State East Bay - They are the stereotypical CSU schools: big campuses but devoid of campus life and the things that make the college years special because of their commuter school status. These schools are a natural transition path from the community colleges - and from my observations they feel like one. So I’ll break it down by each school:
SJSU - They have a nationally ranked football team and a decent business school. Their library is shared with the City of San Jose - and that Downtown San Jose surrounds them on 3 sides. HUGE arena. Campus is a bit sleepy though. Most people who graduate from SJSU stay in Silicon Valley job-wise.

SFSU - Don’t let the fact it’s in San Francisco fool you, it’s just on the SF/San Mateo County border, right smack dab by Daly City. BIG TIME commuter school. Campus is devoid of any form of school pride or social life - unless your idea of fun is pledging into a frat/sorority or getting wasted at the clubs/bars that are scattered throughout the City. The place has a reputation for being extremely liberal and the administration is pretty oppressive. It’s in one of the most expensive/liberal cities in America. The school is full of SoCal transplants - but it won’t change the fact the school is dull as lead. Superficial student body, while San Francisco itself is full of Prius driving idiots. Sadly, I’ll be going there in the fall

Cal State East Bay - Nothing good to write about. Their business school is a hidden crown jewel, it’s made the national rankings a few times. Hayward isn’t a nice town by any stretch of the imagination - it’s a stone’s throw from Oakland.

Chico State - BIG TIME PARTY SCHOOL. Huge greek scene. It’s in the middle of nowhere as well - but the Sierra Nevada is nearby.

“SJSU - They have a nationally ranked football team”

Ummmmm no they dont…

I’ll say known, at least in NorCal.

There’s a rather large difference between ‘known’ and ‘nationally ranked’…

SOUTH CAROLINA

Schools in SC aren’t hard to be accepted into.
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON- Liberal arts college. Overrated…Not hard to get into, In the middle of historical downtown Charleston. A lot of Charleston’s students go here. Large out of state population from northern states. big on basketball. Majority girls.

SC STATE- HBCU, STDs are popular here supposedly.

USC COLUMBIA- The State’s university in the capital of Columbia. Large is a word to describe it. big on football and beer. Well rounded compared to the others. Good musical program.

CLEMSON- USC’s rival. More of a focus on the science field, agriculture, football, and beer. In the middle of nowhere. Has an overrall good reputation though. Good sports.

WINTHROP U- 2nd choice. Accepts most applicants, former girl school near North Carolina. Not much sports…

FURMAN- private religious affiliated school in Greenville. I guess you’re extra special if you go here just because it’s private.

WOFFORD- ?

UNC Asheville - School that UNC applicants who are serious about college use as a backup.

How do you forget to mention The Bob Jones University when talking about South Carolina

Oh I’m sorry I forgot that school was so important!

Bob Jones - Very strict envangelist school. Very tights rules on subjects like dating and clothing. Strong academics …is what I hear. Good volleyball team too. Really good.

From people at my school, I realize these are terrible after a few months of CC:

UC Berkeley: Every kid’s dream school. No matter who you are, you want to go here.

Stanford: You’re not going to get in, don’t bother applying.

UCLA: For people who are smart but can’t get into Berkeley.

UCSD: Good school but who wants to go to college a few miles from home?

UC Davis: People who visited loved it, everyone else thinks it’s a bad-smelling rural school.

UCSB: Party school. You’re more likely to get an STD than graduate in 4 years or something, that’s probably not true but it’s how people see UCSB.

UCI, UCR: Backup UCs

UC Merced: A joke.

SDSU: Where all the partiers who got a 3.0 or less go.

SJSU, SFSU: Where all the non-partiers who got a 3.0 or less go.

West Coast Conference schools: (USD, USF, Santa Clara, St. Mary’s) Good reputation, but the Catholic affiliation turns a lot of people off.

Claremont Colleges: Either people haven’t heard of them or they use them as Ivy safeties.

I’m pretty sure UCLA is everyone in America’s dream school.

The clothing rules at Bob Jones is too well known - the Abercrombie brands are verboten there.

Sounds like Honda’s corporate policy at their plants/R&D facilities - EVERYONE, no matter if you’re a manager, line worker, engineer or janitor must wear a white jumpsuit and a green baseball cap.
