Post your own state's college reputations'

*and the only “college town” in the UC system. *

I’ve heard this mentioned numerous times on CC, but what about Isla Vista?

With all these California schools mentioned, you’d think SDSU would come up a few times!! haha That’s where I’m going next year and I’m from Texas. I also got accepted into ASU, as one poster mentioned, but I just loved San Diego.

UVA-- high school all over again, politically dead, all white, southern hospitality, conservative, ignores subjective application material…

University of Florida- apparently just about my whole school wants to go here. Amazlingly a lot of people I thought would get in got straight out rejected ED. Good academics, not great dorms, middle of nowhere. I personally question its reputation out of the southeast. Most people applying to out of state schools apply here as a safety both for admissions and finances.

Florida State Unviersity- Where the UF rejects go and where the more liberal artsy people go. Good film program.

University of Central Florida- Great modern campus in Orlando. Getting progressively harder to get into. If it had my major I’d seriously consider going there. Good int’l business.

University of South Florida- Kinda like UCF but in Tampa.

Florida International- Accepts just about anyone, and within 2 weeks of applying. You will have to learn some form of Spanish to go there, which I kinda see as a good thing.

University of West Florida- For those who want a small, cheap school. (It really exists)

University of North Florida- Where all the UF and FSU rejects will go because they will get lots of money, and anyone who wants to stay at home or couldnt get into another university.(It exists too)

Florida Atlantic- Dont know much about it

University of Miami- too expensive. Never heard of anyone for my school actually going there, but many accepted.

I will hopefully be going out of state far far far far far far far far away. (UW Seattle sounds good for me)

You mentioned Florida schools…for being such a badass state (for the most part), their two most known schools FSU and U of F are in bad locations IMO. Too much in northern Florida…and Miami, which is in a cool location is a private and expensive school. UCF seems okay, but I’ve always been told that Florida universities are not very good.

minnesota! (not that anyone cares haha  )
I go to a very good inner city public school in saint paul

UM-twin cities - most people from my school end up going here. it’s not a bad school, and the institute of technology honors program is very selective.

UM-duluth - big party school, not academically oriented. a lot of people who want to get away for college but want to stay instate go here.

Macalester College - very good liberal arts college in the heart of saint paul (about a mile from my school). very liberal, and a lot of hippies.

Carleton - the best school in minnesota by far (macalester is up there too though) surprisingly, not many people from my school end up going there because it’s in the middle of nowhere.

University of St. Thomas - SO many people from my school go here. VERY easy to get into…party school…very preppy.

St. Olaf - Good music program…not much else, although i know quite a few people from my school applying here

there are a lot of other schools in the twin cities and around minnesota, but i dont think they are worth mentioning…

I realise this thread is not intended for overseas students, however, i figure someone out there may be interested in studying/exchange in Australia. Plus i am really bored atm haha.

I live in New South Wales. N.S.W states capitol is Sydney. Most students in Australia tend to live at home or off campus.

University of Sydney - The oldest university in Sydney. Has an old campus with sandstone buildings (i realise in the US this is no big deal but in Australia its considerd quite a bonus). Has a history of being the elite university and today has a combination of preppy students and hippy students who like to think they are wierd. Best Arts faculty and strong rep for Law/medicine. One of the toughest to get into. Large student population = 46 thousand students. Has student housing.

University of New South Wales - Sydneys rival and the other tough (elite) uni to get into. Modern buildings and large campus. People tend to love or hate the campus (i love it). Its strengths are in Engineering, Medicine, Science, Commerce and Law. Large student population - over 40 thousand. Near Bondi beach. Has student housing.

University of Technology Sydney - Campus is high rise buildings around Sydney’s CBD, lacks open green areas. Strengths in computing, science and communications. 28 thousand students. It tends to to have a rep for less university spirt in comparison to UNSW and USYD due to the campus limiting student bonding. I am not sure how accurate this perception is though.

Macquarie University - Situated on the suburban outskirts of sydney. Modern green campus. Is quickly gaining in reputation. especially in Commerce and the Arts (humanities).

University of Western Sydney - Has seperate campus’s spread out in western sydney. Tends to be one of the last choices for students unless they live right near by.

There are more universities in the country and a few more scatterd around sydney but those are the main ones. If anyone ever has any questions about studying in Australia feel free to ask me :)

Hahaha. Another aussie eh?

I’ll just add one- The University of Tasmania. Has a world class geology department. Offers admission to anyone in the top half of their class. Has a ton of internationals who can’t get into uni anywhere else and spend all their time playing computer games or drinking something vile. Generally the last choice (only choice for most) for locals.

Where r u applying to sid?

Oh good, im not the only aussie dork who looks at college forums on thier holidays hehe.

I am supposed to be going on exchange second half of 2006 to the US. Atm it looks like it will be Boston college.

How about you? Are you wanting to go to the US or are you going to aim for melbourne? (i hear most tassies aim for melbourne or adelaide)

anyone from Colorado here?

I always liked Colorado School of Mines as a small technical school…the “short tours” of Coors (aka, tasting room) are convenient to the Golden campus. CU & CSU certainly also have some appeal. I’m not a local, so I’ll defer to one.

FYI, for those interested in a thread on state pride for public university systems:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=93568</a></p>

hehe. Better than spending time at Cronulla beach eh? :p

So your already at uni here? which year?

Boston Uni eh? Nice … would be fun :)

Nah- I withdrew all my apps here because I got into my US college ED so yeah.

haha yeh. I live in the east so i have to avoid maroubra beach (although i have to say that the riots were exagerated a bit… they made it appear like the whole of sydney was at war but it was actually only in certain suburbs… still sad though)

Im going into second year at UNSW. What college are you going to? congrats on the acceptance!

Btw boston college is different to boston uni … but hopefully wherever i end up will be fun :)

Cheers mate,

I got into Princeton so yeah.

What exchange options do you guys have at UNSW?

Has everything calmed down nowadays there in Syd? The media made such a fuss of it and made it seem like we’re a nation at war or something like that. Not to mention John Howard claiming the riots weren’t racially motivated :p

Oh wow Princeton. Nice work!

We have alot of options actually. I put my preferences at U Texas- Austin, Boston college and UNC-CH. It is so difficult trying to decide where to go by websites. Every uni obviously states that its wonderful lol. I wish i knew about this page before i put my forms in.

here is a list of all available exchanges http://www.international.unsw.edu.au/exchange/exchangepartners.html</a></p>

Yeh things are quite calm now. Truth be told when the riots were on it made no impact on my lifestyle. I never felt a threat walking through sydney or anything like that. Yeh we all know they were racially motivated, i suppose Johnny couldnt (or didnt want to) go on record saying australians were racist. It would be too damaging. Although its a good excuse to whinge about him. haha.

I just looked at your profile… tim tams in peanut butter? never heard of that one! You will have to take boxes with you as i have heard the US does not have tim tams. (how depressing)

I suppose we should get back to the purpose of this thread lol… sorry to go off track guys.

My school has no imagination. Everyone applies to the UW-Madison, if they dont get in there they go to UW-Eau Claire (or maybe lacrosse or something like that) Madison in my state is the only option most people see. It is a party school when you are talking with other kids, and a prestigious school when you talk about it with your parents friends. overall everyone says its big, and they like it.

university of wisconson seems like a great school from my POV

one of the best combinations for academic, social, and for some financial reasons

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the town of Isla Vista doesn’t count because it was around long before UCSD was founded there, unlike the town of Davis…

I’m pretty sure most of the plateau southeast of the airport was property of MCAS Santa Barbara until after World War II when UCSB moved to that area, and the Isla Vista area was pretty much uninhabited after some failed projects there. And then Isla Vista grew to accomidate students from the emerging university. Proportionally, Isla Vista is around 3/4s UCSB/SBCC students, while I think Davis is somewhere around half.
