Post your own state's college reputations'

A couple more for Texas.

University of North Texas - not academically rigorous, easy to get into. Low graduation rate. Nice people. Kind of artsy, I think

Trinity U - nice location (San Antonio) and very nice dorms. Studious kids, selective admissions. Known for business.

Blinn - community college with dorms, I think. Basically an extension of high school from what I’ve heard.

Austin College - one of Loren Pope’s Colleges that Change Lives. Very, very good for pre med. Very good for education and pre law also. Seemed like the kids were mostly religious and conservative. Also, not located in Austin, but rather Sherman.

I think the others have been pretty well covered. Texas State and UTSA are the big party schools, A&M is cultlike, hickish, and very conservative, UT-Austin is a party school with good academics, Rice is the best :)

I don’t think UTSA is a big party school - it seems more commuter to me.

Maybe it is. I was just thinking of the kids from my school that went there or are applying there. I do know it’s in a really nice part of San Antonio.

I live near UTSA! It is a nice area, especially with La Cantera and all now. UTSA is not necessarily a party school, but to be honest it’s where everyone goes that got rejected from UT. My bro is taking a year there and then transferring to UT (CAP program).

Indiana

Nothing posted for the crossroads of America eh? I’ll start the hoosiers off.

Purdue: My school. I’m sure most of you already know the reputation so I’ll just point out the basics. Good athletics, very conservative, hardcore engineering/technology, great MBA program, “decent campus” (lots of concrete, but still cosmetically pleasing), typically thought of as ivy league even though it’s land grant. not a good choice for artsy liberals. Acceptance is no problem, you don’t even have to write an essay, just fill out the application and see what happens. On the other hand, getting out with an engineering degree will be very difficult.

Indiana Bloomington: awesome party school, solid academics, great medical/mba program, HUGE campus. acceptance is less difficult that purdue.

Notre Dame: rich white kids, however, a very prestigious school if you can get in. great athletics, awesome networking opportunities.

Rose Hulman: Don’t know much about this one other than it’s difficult to get accepted, and typically reserved for the rich.

Ancilla: hick college twenty minutes from my home in northern Indiana. Avoid at all costs.

IUSB: same as Ancilla.

USI: This is where all the Evansville townies end up if they don’t get in to Purdue or Indiana - I have a few friends here.

Michigan

University of Michigan: Hands down best in the state. The choice of top students who will remain in-state.

Michigan State: A decent school, good basketball team. MSU people will argue that it is better than Michigan, but it isn’t even close.

Michigan Tech: Great for engineering. COLD. Very few girls.

Eastern Michigan: Just down the road from U of M, probably the lowest of the state schools.

Central Michigan: Party school for those who don’t get in MSU. (If kids don’t pick Central, they pick Western)

Wayne State: In Detroit. Mainly a commuter campus.

Western Michigan: For people who don’t get into MSU. (If kids don’t pick Western, they pick Central)

Oakland University: Mainly commuters in Oakland/Macomb County who don’t want to go away for school.

yea one of my best friends got into Rose-Hulman

I’m from the beach in Southern California, and here’s what the world around me perceives:

UCB - Smart hippies. Some people call it “The People’s Republic of Berkeley” or UC - Berserkeley.
UCLA - Smart social butterflies and lots of Asians. UCLA = You See Lotsa Asians.
UCSB - Partying and surfing. “University of Casual Sex and Beer.”
UCSD - Science nerds and more surfing.
UCD - Cow fields and aggie kids.
UCSC - Drugs and hippies.
UCI - Asians. “University of Chinese Immigrants.”
UCR - Asians. “University of Chinese Rejects.”
USC - Where the rich kids go. “University of Spoiled Children.”

usc gets a bad rap :(

Berkeley and UCLA - clearly top schools but like all the other UC’s underfunded and overcrowded, class space is a premium, living space even more of a premium. Expect to be triple bunked.
UCSD- also a top school but a reputation for being less friendly - during two occassions I walked across this campus and saw no smiles…joy seemed to have been extracted…still an excellent academic reputation, and I do not support the comment that 9 out of ten students are attractive in San Diego, the rest go to the University.

Davis - this is the school to watch, beat Stanford in Football, soccer and basketball this year, Aggie Pride is overwhelming on campus. The campus is located in the town so there is a lot of interplay. Three minutes by bike ( and you would have a bike there) and you are downtown. ) New College of Biology indicates its growth potential there.
Excellent Med School and a Law School that is in the top 50.

UCSC - designed at Governor Ronald Reagans request to not allow large student rallys, in and on the edge of a great coastal forest- not your usual state school.

Merced - I have only seen the artists renderings of what to expect but I think it will be hard to get students into the central valley air pocket.

State colleges reasonable alternatives for special circumstances like couldn’t get into UC.

Community colleges are under $30 per credit…and you can get a transfer agreement into the UCs. Now that is a deal.

Private colleges of note - USC smart choice for future movie producers and their spouses. Stanford - smart enough to go to Havard but also knows something about climate.

Prize goes to Deep Springs - only a two year school but if you are a super smart male with physical endurance and you want to be a member of a truly unique club…free tuition to anyone who gets in…students run admission and only a few get in each year.
SWITCH STATES to New York
ALBANY STATE - party school - a failed dream of Nelson Rockerfella to compete with his nemises Ronald Reagan and the UC system.

University of Buffallo, and Binghampton, Harder to get into than Oneonta State and the other state colleges but not Berkeley east.

Stoney Brook - A place for kids who don’t know there is a world outside of long island.

NYU and CUNY, honorable mention.

There isn’t enough room to mention all the great privates in New York, but Union is one to look at, lousy city - decent science program. Skidmore, not just for women any more, Columbia, Colgate…

Prize goes to :
State Colleges at Cornell - This is the pizza pie with all the works- The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is the public college for undergraduate business or pre med. ILR and Human Ecology are excellent choices for the person who wants a first class seat at a discount price. Only state tuition but an IVY degree.

Hawaii: no good schools
Prize goes to the private highschools which get their students off the islands.

University of Florida - The top school everyone and their mom wanted to go to. Best school in the state. People say it is a party school, but my friends say it is a little boring. Location sucks… it’s in Gainesville-North Florida… If you are an NMF then you’ll get paid to go there. Cheap education due to Bright Futures. Known for football.

Florida State Unviersity- If you can’t get into UF, FSU is here for you (I don’t know anyone that chose FSU over UF). I have a few friends doing theater/film, they love it. I hate Tallanasty… as they call it up there. Everyone loves Bobby Bowden here.

FAMU - Next door to FSU. Large Black/Egyptian population… Don’t know much about it apart of some folks I know doing the 6 year pharmacy program

University of Central Florida - Lack of majors hurts this school. In Orlando… decent. Another UF reject school

University of South Florida - Don’t know much

Broward Community College/Santa Fe - Accepts anyone that breathes…

Miami Dade College - Also accepts anyone that breathes… Honors college is okay though…

Florida International University - Biscyane Bay campus sucks. University Park is better. Like BCC and MDC

University of North/West Florida - Small, cheap, if you did not get into FSU/UCF/UF, here you go.

Florida Atlantic University - Don’t really know. Seems like BCC a little

Florida Gulf Coast U - I think that’s the name. Very small school. Not for traditional people

University of Miami - People think of this as the university for vapid, spoiled brats. Too Expensive, most choose UF over UM. Some don’t like Coral Gables. Known for football. Great med school.

Nova Southeastern University - Not well known. Good for Psychology, Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Nursing, etc. More science oriented. Everyone does the Dual Admissions program here.

I think there is a Bob Jones clone called Pensacola Christian, but who knows…

Won’t anyone from Pennsylvania give us an assessment of Penn State? Any firsthand knowledge about their honors program?

Whoops – I meant to type UCSB there when mentioning Isla Vista.
This isn’t the first time I’ve mistyped UCSB as UCSD, or vice versa.

““Prize goes to Deep Springs - only a two year school but if you are a super smart male with physical endurance and you want to be a member of a truly unique club…free tuition to anyone who gets in…students run admission and only a few get in each year.””

I once got a pamphlet, application, and one of those generic “consider us, we want you” letters in the mail from Deep Springs. I’d never heard of it before, but something struck me as funny when I flipped through their viewbooks. All the pictures of the students were of guys. And then I realized it was an all guys school.

Which was weird, considering I’m a girl :)

Good thread idea.

Connecticut here.

Yale - Great academics, great campus, decent surrounding area and a nice mix of academics/social scene.

Trinity - Good school, flies under the radar, tops in the NESCAC in many sports (D3). Football program has longest winning streak in college right now.

Wesleyan - A typical student thought of as a(pick a few) pothead, vegan, liberal, incredibly smart, gay. Has a good reputation and is a little more well known than Trinity, at least in the southern half of the state.

Connecticut College - Dull, dreary, but a good education. Absolutely nobody knows about it.

Quinnipiac University - Viewed as worse than it actually is, mostly because a lot of lower than average students get in because they have a parent affiliated with the university. A pretty good school. Known for having extremely hot and slutty girls.

University of Connecticut - The only state school really worth going to. Pretty good academics and a huge party scene. In the middle of nowhere. Most fairly smart social types end up here. Three small satellite schools exist as well, but until I just looked them up, I was only aware of one of them. Nobody goes to them.

Central Connecticut State University - Thought of as a commuter school, same level as Western or Eastern.

Western Connecticut State University - Blah academics, few parties.

Eastern Connecticut State University - Blah academics, more parties.

Southern Connecticut State University - Where the idiots go. Not really as awful as it is made out to be though. Big party school.

University of Hartford - Decent school, flies under the radar. Vin Baker went there.

University of New Haven - See University of Hartford minus Vin Baker.

Sacred Heart University - Big sports school. Big religious school. Better than the state schools for sure.

Fairfield University - A good school that is often overlooked. Probably next best after Yale, Trinity, Wesleyan, and Conn College.

Wow, I never realized how many schools CT had.

UMass Amherst - PARTY!!! Oh, we had good pre-med  Did I mention, we’re #9 Party School in the Country?

UMass Dartmouth - Often considered our second best state school, fairly good business program, besides that…eh

UMass Lowell - Commuter hub, offers a lot of good programs for those a few year out of high school, but I haven’t heard anything about it as a stand alone institution. Plus, it’s parties don’t kick like UMass Amherst ;)

UMass Boston - Everyone seems to forget this one exist. It’s the only one with no housing and it’s a ways from the Boston Metro or Cambridge, way out on the harbor. If it had better location and housing, I’d think it could become our flagship, but right now, no really cares for or mentions it.

MCLA - Wow, who knew we had a public liberal arts college? :rolls eyes: IT’s funny how our public LAC is next door to Williams, #1 LAC, kind of makes you feel like meh. To tell you the truth, some guidance counselors in the state, including my old one, didn’t know it existed.

The 5 State Colleges (Fragminham, Fitchburg, Salem, Westfield, Bridgewater): Westfield is the only one the really functions as a residential college is the usual sense. The rest are mainly Teacher’s Colleges that carry other degree programs and also functionas community college with associate degree programs. Fitchburg State does have a decent engineering program fora school at its level. Salem State is known for seeting some record a few years ago for lowest retention rate, which is why their classes (FrSpJnSr) are lopsided.

MassBay Community College - Hallelujah, and We Shall Reign Forever & Ever!

------------- The High Class MA Private Schools :D-------------------

Harvard Univeristy - Enough said, needs no introduction

MIT - #1 Destination for aspiring engineers as wells as Wellesley girls looking for dates  Has some of the best college architecture in the country.

Amherst College - You’d be suprised of how few people know of it, but CCers know that Amherst means golden. In Northhampton, it is the considered the preppy school, lol, but the Amherst communit and it’s student body is well respected by those who know of it.

Williams College - #1 LAC, hidden gem of he state, hidden way up there, might aswell be in Vermont.

Boston College - Um, BC is sort of on the back burner in the Boston area, nobody really realizes how good of an institution it is.

Tufts University- ooo, that’s cold, second to Harvard and MIT is all that I ever hear. It’s med school is all that is given props in Boston, otherwise, it is seen as the back up school for Harvard and MIT, which is a shame, such a great school.

Boston University - the reach for all Boston public grads, what suprises me is that in middlesex and essex county, BU is the #1 destination of valedvictorians. It has much respect around here, solid academics but no campus.

Brandeis Univeristy- the elite Jewish Institution, though Jews make up only 50% of the campus, no one is really fond of their campus, but still solid academic programs.

Wellesley College - :Princess Diana wave:, the formerly the proper school of women, Wellesley still carries that charm as the Queen Elizabethian school that graduates only the best like Hilary Clinton :)

Emerson College - The ultimate film school…also former #1 for school that never studies

AHHHH, Northeastern, Smith, Holyoke, Wheaton, Clark, Holy Cross, WPI, Olin, Simmons, Lesley, Hampshire…the list is too long to finish, and it keeps going!

Wow, so many posts and I don’t think there’s been one about Illnois yet. Here are some schools:

Northern Illinois University (NIU) - incredible Jazz program, great Music program in general. I visited once during a competition thing, campus seemed somewhat dull IMO. Other than that I don’t know much about this school.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) - probably the most popular in-state public school, amazing engineering program (ranked #4 I believe), they have a campus honors program that allows certain students to register for classes earlier than most people (good for getting into the classes you want to before they fill up). Class sizes can be around 300 people for most intro courses. The campus is decent, not nearly as stunning as, say, Stanford’s. Students are mainly from Illinois. Also considered somewhat of a party school.

University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) - great GPPA program for people interested in various medical fields, very useful for Med school later on. Campus is considered to be somewhat ghetto, not too pretty. Convenient location, in the city.

Northwestern University - Campus is more modern, less old-style architecture, pretty calming/relaxing campus IMO. Great school for business, engineering program’s not too bad either. Party scene isn’t large, dorms seem nice. Fantastic music hall for those of you who are interested. Great athletic facilities.

University of Chicago - a superb school, great for economics, finance, business, physics, medicine. Campus is primarily old-style architecture, located near a large hospital, convenient access to the city of Chicago. Also nearby is Hyde Park, overseeing Lake Michigan (pretty neat scenery).

New York BABY!

Albany- Good academics, Crazy Party School.

Buffalo- Great Academics, mainly in science.great town also.

Binghamton- One of the best public schools in the northeast, therefore alot of snobs that were rejected from better schools.

Stony Brook- Lot of snobby long island kids.good in pre-med.

someone please post more info on these schools.thanks.

I’ll give my 2 cents on the UC’s now. Basically the same that other people said

Berk- Bunch of left leaning wacko hippies. But a good school nonetheless

LA- the most liked school in the system.

SD- Nice location, but socailly dead.

SB- STD capital of the world.

Davis- Cow city.

Irvine- Asians Asians Asians

Riverside- Who gives a crap

Santa Cruz- Same as berkely, maybe worse, but without the good school rep.

Merced- New school in the middle of nowhere
