My D is applying for a scholarship. The instructions are that all of the material is to be mailed in a 9x12 envelope. She needs to have an envelope pre-stamped for her HS Guidance Counselor. What would be the postage necessary for a 9x12 envelope?

Thanks, I looked at usps, but it just confused me.

It is confusing since the last postage increase.

Postage will depend on how much the envelope weighs, so estimate the sheets of paper to be included in the envelope and check it out on a home kitchen scale if you have one. If you aren’t sure, be generous with your extra ounces. Bottom line, minimum of .80, then an extra .17 for every additional ounce.

The rates for a first class large envelope can be found here:

I have a postal scale and here is what it tells me:

any amount less than or exactly equal to [9X12 + 2 sheets paper = 1 oz] put on 80 cents (for instance, envelope plus 1 or 2 sheets paper)

any amount between 1 oz and [9X12 + 8 sheets paper = 2 oz] put on 97 cents (for instance, envelope plus 6 sheets paper)

any amount between 2 oz and [9x12 + 14 sheets paper = 3 oz] put on $1.1.4 (for instance, the envelope plus 12 sheets of paper)

Does that make sense? I don’t know how else to say it…In other words the post office charges you the full extra 17 cents for any fraction of an ounce.

you could bring the envelope with all the papers to the post office, they should weigh it for you, sell you the postage even though you aren’t ready to mail it yet – then you’re fine – unless the gc adds more papers to it.
