Any thoughts on the impact of a potential travel ban?
I wouldn’t be too concerned, some say that invading Canada and Greenland will be of higher priority, surprised CNN didn’t focus on that
The article writes that China & India may be added to the list of banned countries. Why India ?

Does this mean they can never go home and see their families ?
I do support implementation of this policy:
the revocation of student visas of “radical anti-American and antisemitic foreigners”.
It does not matter that they have legal valid student visas. They have to go through immigration when they reenter. Friends who were not citizens but here on legal visas told me that shortly after 2016, they experienced very hostile treatment upon reentry. Better to return before jan 20th. By next august things may be clearer.
intl students at Hamilton also got an email advising them to come back before inauguration.
Many international student advising offices across US colleges have been advising international students, especially those from China, to enter the US before Trump’s inauguration. While I personally have reservations about how feasible the ban could be, students are told to return before 1/20 in case of any difficulties to enter the country after Trump’s inauguration.
Again, I do think that any travel ban could likely be short-lived and unfeasible, but I do think that it sends an unfriendly message.
I put this out in the Parent’s Forum to keep it out of a political discussion. If some ban comes through from certain countries, what is the potential effect on the upcoming admission cycle? Our S20 and his friends benefitted from COVID-19 in terms of admissions; if a certain amount of international students are reluctant to come to the US for school, does it make admissions overall less competitive?
maybe for other intl students from that region. they are not comparing domestic students to intl students for the same spots.
I’m not sure I understand this. If fewer international students compete for a finite number of spots, wouldn’t more spots be available to domestic students?
No, most top schools have a percentage of international students they take in. It will benefit the international students who don’t have the ban. Except if the university wants to decrease the overall enrollment of international students.
Keep in mind universities have seen a drop in Chinese students overall but you didn’t see a less competitive pool.
I’ll be blunt. International students are often considered cash cows. They pay full price, which is why some schools have very large international student populations. Schools don’t necessarily limit domestic students in favor of international students, but rather fill otherwise empty seats with students who will pay. While there are some schools that take international students for other reasons (such as to raise their profile globally), many schools take them because they want to come to the U.S. for school & they’ll pay tuition. Students are wise to return before inauguration simply because of the unknown. Better safe than sorry.
This will not affect top tier schools as much.
