Potential undergrad applicant

Hey guys,

I’m planning to apply to Cal next year as a freshman for the incoming class of 2012. I have a pretty basic question for you all:

There are about a dozen colleges that make up UC Berkeley. Do a very large majority of incoming freshman go to the main campus, Letters & Science? I’m planning to pursue Computer Science, but noticed that the Engineering college also offers CompSci. I’m aware that the Engineering college is noticeably harder to get in to.

Also, I’m reasonably sure that I want to pursue Computer Science, but would it be a good idea to go in undeclared?

Sorry for the vagueness in my questions, it’s my first post here on CC.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The majority enter the college of letters and sciences (usually called L&S here). Next in size would be engineering (called CoE).

If you enter L&S, no matter what you say or don’t say on the application, you are evaluated and admitted as undeclared. You declare after satisfying the prereqs for the major, usually about at the end of soph or beginning of junior year.

The classes are named for their nominal graduation year, not their entry year. The class of 2012 will be juniors this fall. If you apply next year you are applying to join the class of 2015.
