Potluck Roommates

I’m sort of reluctant to use the Roommate Profiler to find roommate matches, then email them to get to know them, decide who I’m most compatible with, etc, because I feel like I’ll end up choosing a roommate who’s too similar to me and not really gaining that widening of perspective that living with someone unlike me could provide. At the same time, I’m a little worried about just going potluck.

I’m wondering: if I only indicated building choice when I applied for housing, how will UT select my roommate? Also (and I mention this last because I don’t know if it would make a difference), I was accepted to BHP and Plan II by priority decision (long time ago, lol) and indicated Honors housing as my top choice. Would going potluck for Honors housing yield different results than going potluck for other housing options? (Should I just go ahead and use the Roommate Profiler because Honors students are probably less diverse than the whole UT body?)

From UT’s website: When roommates are assigned, housing staff use your age, classification and major to match you with an appropriate student. Housing staff does not have access to information entered into the Roommate Profiler system.
