What are some practical/useful courses at cal? CS programming courses, e7, biotech lab?

E7 is indeed a practical course, but I wouldn’t recommend taking it for fun unless you have an extreme desire to learn matlab.

I took E7 for fun and I’m so glad I did. It made my life much easier in other classes like ieor 221,math 128a, and Econ 141. It was also pretty easy except for some of the assignments which were time consuming. Basically if you do all the homework correctly you will know Matlab well enough to not have to study for any of the midterms or the final.

What major?

If not CS or EECS, a CS minor may help your job and career prospects if you are in a major with poor job and career prospects (e.g. biology or humanities).

Stuff in the CS9 offerings. Something like Python or UNIX would be pretty helpful for anything involving a computer. Knowing how to write scripts to automate your tasks on the computer could be a huge time saver.

would some of the bioe classes with like protein informatics/computational biology be job-applicable?
