Practically failing physics (IEP violations) so dropping half year

Hi, so I’ve been having physics issues and have been given the option by my school to drop the class. I was in Honors Physics Quarter 1 but was failing. I got switched into Academic physics. The F from honors physics was transferred over, and I was not given the opportunity to make up any work. I got a tutor and tried harder, but I could only raise my grade to a D. My teacher committed numerous IEP violations and has been practically forcing me out.

My school decided to have me drop the course half year. They agreed to give me half a credit and a “P.” However, I reported Physics as a full year on my common app.

I already got accepted with scholarships to Catholic, USJ, UHart, and Central Connecticut State University. I also got into Temple (a reach) and am awaiting decisions from Providence, Fordham, Bentley, SMU, and UConn.

Is this going to impact my acceptances? Should I notify the schools? When notifying them, should I include the IEP violations?

You have acceptances and a Pass. You won’t get rescinded for that.

I wouldn’t contact the schools, and I definitely wouldn’t tell them about the IEP ‘violations’- that is the sort of thing that at best sounds like an excuse coming from a student. I

If I understand correctly, you reported taking a full year Honors Physics course but instead will have a P for a half-year regular Physics course that was then dropped.

Is that correct?

If so, I’m not quite of the same “you won’t get rescinded” certainty. Contact the schools immediately to determine next steps. Don’t blame teachers in your discussion with schools - that won’t go over well.

If there were issues with specific accommodations, deal with your GC and school administration.

@collegemom3717 @RichInPitt I didn’t report honors physics I reported the academic class I was moved into. I did report that it was a full year though should I just say that this was an error. The school doesn’t offer half-year physics, but they’re willing to give me half a credit and it will appear as if it were a half year class. Would this look suspicious?

The issue is if you will have 4 years of science (or a lab) if the college requires 4 years of science for admission.

You will most likely get no credit for the 1/2 year, so if physics is required for your major you’ll have to start in the first year of physics.

@twoinanddone I’m a Risk Management and Insurance or Finance major. Physics won’t be a requirement.

I looked at all of the schools and none require 4 years, but some recommend it. I could always add a half year science elective. We’re only 3 or 4 days into the semester.

High Schools are obligated to report 1st semester grades to all of the colleges you applied to. When the colleges look at your transcript, they will see H Physics .5 credit P. This is probably the best option since it will not show an F or withdrawal and will not be a detriment to your GPA.
They also file an updated counselor report that will state any changes and this is where you must work with the counselor on exactly how the change is reported. Some counselors will state student was scheduled to take AP Physics but per discussion with counselor and teacher, decided in student’s best interest to take H Physics, the course will not be taken next semester, instead student will be enrolled in…( environmental science, marine bio, etc. any half year course offered, **even an online course that you will do well in).
It depends upon the individual colleges and their selectivity how they interpret this. Your grade will not be affected, and you replaced the course with another science. If you are not applying for a science or engineering major, I doubt this will have any effect.
Were your grades in your other classes good? Are you taking other AP or H courses this semester?
I would NOT contact the school as you would then be admitting to an F or D and that may impact the decision.
I would try to wrap this up quickly as counselors are in the process or have already sent out updated transcripts.
