Hi. I am currently a sophomore taking Geometry this year. I am ending with Pre-calc as a senior. I want to major in either nursing or something business related. I really want to go to a good college for example; UCSD, University of Austin Texas, or UCI. There’s no way of skipping a math lane according to my counselor. Is ending with pre-calc acceptable?
Could you double up on a math class next year? Some people at my school took precalc and algebra 2 at the same time so they could take calculus during their Senior year. Some colleges like students to have taken calculus in HS, but if it just isn’t possible for you, don’t stress too much about it.
Hey assemblingphilosophies,
I am not allowed to double up in my school either.
Pre-Calc is fine. Take a look at the course load for pre-nursing majors. Most require college algebra and statistics freshman/sophomore year, then you apply to the nursing program and take nursing classes. No calculus for nursing. Just noticed that you mentioned business. Again, look at the course load for one of the schools you are interested in. The website more than likely shows a four year plan. Precalc/calc/statistics are typically required for business majors…but you can take these the first two years of undergrad.
As you said, there’s no possible way for you to skip ahead so don’t worry about it. You’ll take Calc in college.
I’ve had classmates from my school take Geometry and Algebra II in sophomore year and end with AP Calc AB/BC. Since there’s no way for you to get to Calc in high school, don’t worry about it. Like what @snowfairy137 said, you’ll just take it in college.
For my PT major, I’m required to take Pre-Calculus and Trig in the first year, not Calculus. Maybe it’ll be different for nursing, so take a look at the course load to see what you’re getting into.
Hope this helps and best of luck!
I teach in a college prep high school.
This year I’ll have 5 precalc classes of 32-38 students each. (Last year I had a 42, but that was unusual.)
Every single one of those kids will go to college, some to top schools.
Don’t sweat it.
Precalculus is what you need for nursing so don’t worry. In addition, for nursing you want to have had a bit of statistics in preparation for your statistics class - will your school let you take Statistics regular or AP Stats alongside precalculus?
