Hey, I was admitted to Yale and I wanted to get a headstart on my experience. I want to talk a summer class in Calculus (Calculus of Functions of One Variable II) because I’m in BC Calculus right now and I would expect it to be much the same. It’d be nice to acclimatise before everyone else and just get used to Yale. However, is it a good experience? And do many people get admitted?

One more question, how many classes do freshman generally take during the year? 4/5? And if I took this summer class, would it be one less class during the year? Thanks

math 115 is equivalent to the second half of BC calc. many people take it after BC, but mostly because they took calc junior year or something and forgot a lot. I’m afraid you might be bored if you take the same math class over again, and you don’t want to dislike the first class (and the only one at that time) that you take.
I haven’t done the summer session and i don’t really know anyone who has, so i can’t really give you advice on the program.

but to answer the second part of your question, you need to average 4.5 credits a semester overall. (and yes you can get half credits). most freshmen take 4-4.5 in the fall and 4-5 in the spring. you only need 8 credits to become a sophomore but if you do that then you have to take more in other years since you need to average 9 a year. So if you take a summer class you can then take 4 credits each semester and be in a good position.

also, i understand wanting to acclimate so i just wanted to remind you about preorientation programs, which last anywhere from 3 days to a week before move in in the fall. there is FOOT (backpacking for 4 or 6 days), freshperson conference (boyscout camp for 3 days), Harvest (farming for a week), cultural connections (diversity activities and staying on yale campus for a week) and OIS (international student orientation).
then you move in on a friday and classes don’t start until wednesday, so you have plenty of time.
i know that’s not what you asked, but yale doesn’t just throw you in. there is plenty they offer to get acclimated. sorry for diverging from your question. i don’t really know the answer, but i wanted to do my best to help you. congrats on your acceptance!

I’d say enjoy your last summer. Why incur the extra expense of classes and living in New Haven? Spend the summer on the beach or working or travelling, I say.
