Pre-Med & Study Abroad

If I do study study abroad for a semester, it’s going to be difficult for me to finish my pre-med requirements, take my MCATs and apply/interview for medical school.

If I do take a semester or year abroad I would have to wait a year after college to go to medical school.

Because of this I want to do study abroad the summer after my sophomore year. If I do that, would my college, Bowdoin College, help pay for the costs of the program, or would I have to pay for it all? Right now if I do a semester abroad Bowdoin will pay for almost all of it.

Also, would the classes count toward my Bowdoin GPA since it’s like an extra semester?

I think you’ll have to ask your college that.

Your thread can’t be given a simple answer other than ^keepit’s. But to try to address some of your questions–

I’m not sure what this means. I assume it mean your tuition payment (including financial aid) will pay for it. This means during a regular semester. In general, most schools will not finance a summer program.

If your program is a Bowdoin abroad, meaning you are attending Bowdoin but in a location other than the main campus, your grades should count towards your gpa. However, if you attend an approved program, meaning Bowdoin recognizes it and will accept the credits, generally the credits are considered transfer and the grades will appear on your transcript but not count in your gpa.

I think a semester abroad is a great experience. I have a D2 coming home in two weeks and a D1 who attended a semester abroad last year. Their life and learning experiences are immeasurable and not ever duplicated.

Check with your advisor to make sure whether it is still possible to graduate in 4 yrs. or if you would have to go another semester, and hence a year for medical school.

Good luck.
