Pre-Med Volunteer

Hello Everyone,

I am interested in applying to medical school. I am debating between two pre med extracurricular activities to participate in during the Spring 2015 semester, but I am not sure which one would be better. Here is a description of the two volunteer opportunities I am considering:

1) Health Literacy Volunteer at NY Methodist Hospital

In this program “Health Literacy volunteers are trained to teach patients on the following topics:
navigating and understanding over-the-counter and prescription medication labels
proper dosing and managing multiple medications
nutrition basics including navigating the Nutrition Facts Label”.
Requires 3 hours of volunteer per week for 6 months

2) Clinical Research Volunteer at Mount Sinai/ St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital

In this program, “Students assist with clinical research projects in a variety of ways, including confirming and scheduling appointments; data collection, entry, and analysis; and compiling and submitting essential documents in accordance with institutional guidelines”.

Requires 10 hours a week for 4 months

This hospital is right across the street from my college

Which one of these volunteer programs do you think is better for medical school?

There are likely both competitive, so you should apply to both and then if you get into both, consider which one you would prefer. Either one would be fine, it’s up to what you enjoy

Thank you for advise. I will apply to both.
