Pre-Professional Engineering

During my college search I have often overlooked liberal arts colleges. I’ve noticed that many have Pre-Professional Engineering majors. Does that mean that it prepares you to enter a master’s program in engineering? I really like some of these schools but I don’t want to be buying snake oil.

Not really. You will still have to take some pre-req’s to be able to enter a MS in Eng. What type of engineering are you interested in?

A number of LACs have joint programs with a nearby engineering program. At Illinois Institute of Technology, we have students from Dominican University and Loyola University Chicago take engineering courses with us and at the end get 2 degrees. It clearly takes a bit longer for them to do this and there aren’t very many who do it.

I’m interested in computer and biomed but I’ve been told to pursue electrical first and then specialize. I’m also interested in politics but I’ve ruled that out as a career.

Electrical Engineering is a good place to start for a biomedical engineering. The advantage is that if you have an electrical engineering degree, you can jump off into a well defined career as an engineer if you choose. This kind of career is not yet widely available for graduates of Biomedical Engineering B.S. programs.
