Preference to FL?

I’m a hs junior and course selection is literally next wednesday and I’m freaking out about whether to take a fourth year of a foreign language or AP Journalism. I’ve heard that SU shows preference to those who have taken more than the stanard 2-3 years of a FL but the course is a joke and it would be a huge honor to do AP j. Only 30 kids (out of about 2400) in my entire school will get the chance to do it and I can (I already do IB English and next year will be my third year of photojournalism, also known as yearbook, and I will probably be editor-in-chief)…but I need to decide soon…what should I do???

There’s AP journalism at your school? They have an AP test for that? LOL.

About the 4th year of language…seriously…don’t worry about. I don’t think even the most selective schools mind if you decide to drop your language your senior year. At my school the entire foreign language program is ridiculous…and then senior year, they decide to get serious with it…i.e. serious as in native speakers fail. So, I dropped out of FL, and trust me, it didn’t hurt my chances anywhere one bit. The acceptences are rolling in (+ scholarships) from more selective schools than Syracuse.

AP Journalism? …jealous. I don’t even get honors credit half the year, and I’m the editor of the school paper.

And I don’t think it matters if you only have 3 years of a language.

that makes me feel so much better…another year of FL would kill me…it’s such a waste of time at my school…the department is crap. I still think I might call up the school and get their opinion

another option would be to self-study for the sat II in your FL so that you can still prove proficiency…if you got a good score, there would be no questions about that (at least in my mind!).

good idea! thanks

do what you want to do. if you are applying to newhouse, ap journalism would be great. it shows that you are really passionate about it.
