Pregnancy

Hi people. I’m not sure if this issue has been addressed before but…how do colleges handle pregnant students? I am not pregnant myself but several girls in my class graduated with me this past June either pregnant or already with small children. Do colleges “allow” pregnant students to live on-campus? What about when the baby is born? One of the girls is my best friend and I just want some information for her sake as well.

At UCSB (where I will attend) the university makes accomodations including housing and babysitting services.

The question you asked might be the best question ever in CC!

I’ve heard of pregnant women going to college, but I dunno about accomidations for them to live on campus, because the college I’ve heard of I don’t think has dorms.

I seriously don’t think that cc is good place to ask this…I doubt anyone in CC is pregnant…exculding the parent forum…

why isn’t this a good topic? It’s a very relavant one I think, even if not for you in your present situation :p

i think he just meant that it was a bad place to ask because no one will know the answer.

Actually it’s a very good topic. Because it is entirely possible that someone close to us (or even someone on the forum) could be pregnant/have kids in college.
I know an 18 year old college sophomore who’s 8 months pregnant, and another girl who’s in law school with 3 kids. They have a hard time, but they cope. The girl in law school is 3rd in her class, despite having kids. :)

Hey, we’re here because our kids are getting ready for college. We can’t afford any new ones!!

When I taught college, I had some unmarried, pregnant students, who went to class and did their work just as anyone else would. Some who are pregnant decide to take time off, particularly if there are complications. Many, though, continue to take classes just like pregnant women continue to work.

I think that pregnant women also would be allowed to live in dorms because to ban them from dorms would probably break the law against discriminating against the disabled.

Being pregnant does not mean that one has to drop out of college and give up any chance of getting a degree. Many colleges also provide low cost childcare for students and provide other accommodations.

Yeah…I actually think collegeboard, when they show college info, says under services, or somewhere, if that college has childcare available…
It is interesting, I’ve kind of wondered myself since most of the time you hear about pregnant women, they drop out of school and such.
