Premed and Computer Science at Stanford?

Hey everyone,

I’m a high school senior 99% sure she’s attending Stanford in the fall, and I was hoping someone could give some insight into whether it’s possible/sane to try to major in computer science while taking the required premed courses. I have a general sense that this may seem challenging, but I want to know if it falls in the category of “tough” or “actually impossible”. :P

Just as some background, I’ve grown up loving technology and computers, which is what first drew me to Stanford and still makes me really excited about attending (Silicon Valley! :D) But recently, a flood of people (friends, teachers, coaches, etc.) have been urging me to go into medicine. Since I barely have any exposure to medicine and have never seriously considered delving into that area, could someone please give a brief idea of what that whole track of life is like?

Thanks!

I’m sure it is possible since there is some overlap (math and physics if you are in the right cs track), and unit wise it adds up to being doable, but you really should contact one of the academic advisors or premed advisors at Stanford.

That’s not a very good reason to go into medicine…

Medical training, in addition to premed requirements in college (which are doable with CS - just to answer your question…), will require 4 years of medschool (which will cost well over $200,000), 4 years of residency training(= no life to speak of), and likely 2-3 years of fellowship training. So you better be pretty sure you want to be a doctor before you get into it.
