Premed and Study Abroad

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it is possible to do premed (take the required courses for med school), be a sociology major, and still study abroad for a year at Columbia because of all the core classes?

Thanks

Yes, I believe it is possible to do pre-med and study abroad.

http://www.college.columbia.edu/students/studyabroad/planning/premed.php

I’m not sure how sociology will play into it though.

My daughter is currently a senior, a pre-med and studied abroad for the second semester and one summer session last year (seven months). Pre-med/travel abroad is doable but it has meant some heavy semester courseloads to get everything done - her major is outside of the sciences as yours will be. Columbia highly discourages taking pre-med courses during the summer which makes it all the more challenging.
