My son and I were looking on the website at the clubs listed alphabetically. We did not find any clubs for premed students. Does anyone know if there are any clubs, other than the EMT group? Along the same lines, is there a house that is considered premed? Thanks for the insight.

You are looking for the HPPLC for premed clubs. If by house you mean fraternity, then I would say there is not. However there is a very active Chemistry fraternity called AXE (the E being a capital sigma) that he can join.

There are no specific GLOs (if you’re talking social GLOs) that are specifically premed, you’ll find a pretty even distribution amongst a lot of the houses, although Fiji and SigEp probably have a few more. Don’t choose a GLO based on major, it’s a bad idea.

A lot of premeds get involved with Timmy Foundation, you’ll see a lot of callouts for that in the chemistry building since Dr. Reck is heavily involved with that. Others that I know of include Alpha Chi Sigma (the chemistry academic GLO) and most of the other IU leadership groups (Student Athletic Board, IUSA, SAA, etc.).

I wouldn’t look for specific premed clubs as much as I’d look for leadership opportunities. I know many successful med students who weren’t involved in anything considered premed outside of academics, but were leaders in their fraternities/sororities/clubs, volunteered, and did research.

Thank you mrlinkcc and soccergurl7988! This is exactly what he was looking for. He is very eager to begin his college experience.

Have him go to the student involvement fair during Welcome Week and visit the tables of orgs he’s interested in joining. If he’s interested in pledging, encourage him to go through that. Encourage him to get involved, but not TOO involved–burnout is common, it’s better to be really interested in a couple of things than hold a bunch of general member positions

Thanks, soccergurl7988, that is how this whole conversation started with us. He wanted to know what orgs would be at the fair so that he could look for the one’s he would be interested in. The alpha list did not indicate a premed club per say. His high school encouraged him to get involved, but limit it. He started a premed club, played lacrosse and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) both freshman and sophomore year. Junior year he joined SNOWBALL which was a leadership group, and was inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). Senior year he took integrated gym and volunteered hours for his NHS requirements. He had a part time job during his junior and senior year and shadowed doctors each summer. He was a member of Northwestern Memorial Hospital Medical Explorers all four years. He seems to know what he can handle so I have confidence that he will take on only what he can handle. We were just trying to find out what was out there so he could zero on in the orgs that interested him.

I should have read before I hit post. He was in premed club all four years as President and FCA all four years.
