Hey all, I’m currently a pre-med freshman with a BME major. If I want to study abroad, I think my only option would be Dresden, Germany. I’m currently enrolled in Calc 2, and I heard that I need to miss a semester of math to study abroad? Is this true? So instead of taking multivariate in the spring semester, I would be taking writing 150, and then multivariate fall of next year and linear algebra in Dresden. However, I saw on the website that both linear algebra and differential equations are offered in Dresden, so can’t I take linear algebra fall of next year and differential equations in Dresden?

I asked my advisor and she said that I could taking writing 150 next semester if I wanted to, but recommended me to take multivariate over the summer.

Also, does anyone know about orgo and studying abroad? It’s not offered in the Dresden program, but I have to take it somehow for pre-med. I’d rather not take it over the summer since med schools probably won’t like that.

I am a sophomore bme student so I hope that I can help you.
For studying abroad…you can go to either Dresden, Germany; Grenoble, France; or Tel Aviv, Israel. Dresden is normally the choice for those who are ahead in their studies for more classes are offered there then at any of the other ones. That being said…there is no reason for you to necessarily take multivariate during the summer. You could take it during next semester along with py211, ch 102, and matlab or your ek 131/132 modules. And then just take a semester of math off or take linear algebra in the fall or be 200 (probability for BME). Then you would be taking differential equations abroad so you wouldn’t necessarily have to go to dresden but you could if thats where you want to go. Or you could take differential equations first semester sophomore year and then be able to only apply to dresden.

In terms of organic chemistry…its not necessarily bad to take it during the summer. From the three (or possibly 4) advisors that I have talked to they have said that if you are getting C’s in gen chem and such and then taking orgo over the summer and getting an A then its a problem for that shows that you can handle it when its by itself but with a full courseload you cannot. So if you are getting A’s or even B’s in general chemistry then there is no reason to not take it during the summer. (I have at least 8 friends who all got either A’s or high B’s in gen chem freshman year who took it during the summer with the same professor who teaches during the year and said they preferred it for it was much smaller class sizes so he really got to actually know them.) Another option is to take orgo 1 first semester sophomore year…go abroad second semester sophomore year and then take orgo 2 second semester junior year…or you could take orgo 1 and 2 junior year. As engineers we take physics earlier then most other premed students so if you take orgo junior year you aren’t putting yourself behind at all.
