Premed?

How does Upenn’s premed compare to Duke’s?

better if you ask a Pennn student, worse if you ask a Duke student.

They’re pretty much on par along with a few other schools like Hopkins or WashU. I give Penn a slight edge beyond my personal bias just because overall the school has more strong departments in disparate fields, which is good for both people who wish to be premed but not a science major, and for people who drop the premed track altogether (as many do).

Also, keep in mind that both Penn and Duke, along with the vast majority of other schools, do not have a premed ‘program’ (i.e. a major). You major in whatever you want and take a set of classes required of you by medical schools. Penn, as at most schools, has Premed advisors who can help you with scheduling and the application process, but there isn’t a formal department. The reasoning beind this I believe is that being a ‘premed’ major, in addition to sounding silly, leaves you with few options should you not be accepted to any medical school, as is the case for about 50% of applicants each year.
