prep school interviews

My daughter and I are in the process of touring the various prep/ boarding schools in the N/E. Would anyone like to share some insight on the ‘on campus’ interview process. Aside from, ‘dress appropriately’, are there certain questions that need be asked by us or will be asked by the interviewer that my daughter should be prepped for? Guessing the cliche questions to be - “Tell me about yourself, Why do you want to attend, what are your areas of interest” … is there more to it or am I over thinking and over preparing for this?

Ken - I don’t know which prep schools you’re considering, so I can’t say whether you’re over-thinking/preparing. In my D’s experiences, the prep school interviewers were very good at making prospies feel comfortable. We went the “no prep” route and it worked out just fine.

Kencasa1 – Under the ‘High School’ section here at CC, you’ll find a whole Prep School admissions area. They’ll answer every question you’ve got and some you didn’t even know you had! Good luck!

My son did a few prep school interviews. I said don’t forget to smile, make eye-contact, respond in multi-sentence answers. That’s very basic, though; likely your daughter has that down. At the time he was a typical 14 year old guy, so they were good tips. lol

Tell your daughter to do her research and find out what special programs each of the schools has. Just like a job interview, it is important to go in knowing the “company”. If she can ask specific questions unique to that school and its offerings, she will make an impression. i.e. “I saw on your website that you have a guest speaker’s program every Tuesday night.” How do you select those speakers? That program interests me very much because…" Or, “I noticed that there are stacks of NY Times and Wall Street Journals in the classroom buildings. Are those for the students?” These schools are trying to build a community of interesting and involved students, so it is important to come out of the blocks showing what you will add to the school.
