^Plus the girlfriend at Harvard but of course that doesn’t make a compelling story to the judge for missing curfew!
According to a reporter on twitter, the victim’s uncle and father arrived in the courtroom.
@Derivativeofx I would caution you that while you may have your own cultural attitudes towards women’s sexuality and modesty you’d be best served to adapt to American culture, laws and the student code of conduct on your campus. You may argue the fine points of the issue but the standard of behavior expected is of a reasonable American Joe or Jane.
It’s been pointed out here that it is now understood that nonconsensual sex and sexual harassment are not about sex but rather about control and violence towards another human being. Ponder that and you may see why society no longer buys the asking for it defense.
This 53 second video from the BBC made me smile. 10 year old Charlotte and Henrietta being interviewed by BBC presenter Andrew Neil - the politics of the discussion are not important. For me it soothed the emotion I felt when I read the unmoderated #1438. We’re doing just fine!
By breaking the terms of his court imposed curfew, it’s unlikely the court will go lightly on him. Especially considering this is another data point added to a pattern of entitled behavior and attitude he’s had from commission of the act to now.
I’m also wondering whether the parents facilitated his breaking curfew and whether there will be any court imposed sanctions on them if this was found to be the case.
OP’s not likely to relate strongly to either case, especially the former for the following reasons:
North Africa which Egypt is a part is culturally and geographically distinct from the sub-Saharan areas(Especially western areas of sub-Saharan Africa) where slaves brought to the US originated.
OP doesn’t sound like he’s American so he’s not likely to relate to the Japanese-Americans and their experience with internment. Incidentally, several Japanese-American friends have noted there’s a great cultural divide/gap between Japanese-Americans, especially those whose families were in the US to have experienced internment firsthand and Japanese who spent most/all their lives from birth living in Japan*.
Understandable as the cultural influences and experiences in their formative years were very different…especially whether one spent those formative years as part of the dominant majority culture of their birth country concerned as opposed to spending all/most of those years growing up as a member of a distinct minority in a society dominated by another racial/ethnic/cultural group.
- Especially if one didn't emigrate from Japan or other country of origin where one's part of the dominant majority until one was a late teen/young adult.
Bail just revoked.
The police are investigating a rape at Sidwell Friends in DC, too. Not a boarding school, but a top day school. That will also be a high profile case if charges are brought, I am sure.
Glad the judge continued to see through the BS. Labrie tried to blame his prior actions on the school. Who is he going to blame this one on?
One would think his actions to date would have a bearing on any attempt at getting a reduced sentence for good behavior. His lack of common sense seems triggered by something narcissistic/pathological.
Does the judge know what he is doing? I think some posters know better.
Sidwell is where the Obama girls go to school.
Oh, and Labrie wasn’t visiting the girlfriend after all. Big surprise there. (Not.)
Maybe I missed something, but wasn’t he ordered by Harvard to stay off their campus?
@LucieTheLakie I had that same question about staying off of Harvard’s campus. I believe I read he was banned from St. Paul’s but I wonder if Harvard did the same when it revoked his acceptance. Does anyone know?
And if he really did have a Harvard girlfriend up until the hearing started at 1:30 he can be darn sure he doesn’t now!
I’m confused. He was taking an online course, correct? But he didn’t want anyone to know “where he was going to school.” So where was he going to school?
^^^ My guess is that he was doing Harvard Extension online classes. Just a guess. But it would explain why his lawyer said he had to travel to Boston to use a library, and it might explain why he supposedly was meeting with a professor for whom he was working. Conveniently, doing Harvard online classes would make him feel that he was still connected with Harvard.
It would also explain why he feared a “media frenzy” if it came out. I doubt anyone would have cared if he had taken classes at an unknown college.
“it might explain why he supposedly was meeting with a professor”
Skype?
“It would also explain why he feared a “media frenzy” if it came out.”
But, he didn’t have to make up some girlfriend story if it wasn’t true. How about choosing not to talk about it at all?
I like how his attorney said the Vice reporter “accosted” him. The only accosting took place in May 2014.
LOL @doschicos - that jumped out at me as well. How dramatic. Probably didn’t help trying to present him as the victim while he is violating a bail order.
Here’s the article from the AP via our local paper. Labrie grew up here. http://hosted2.ap.org/NHWLV/43dda9ff6c4347c09d7ecdb8d0d1cdea/Article_2016-03-18-US–Prep%20School-Rape%20Trial/id-87e6dba2efa84a80baecb45d4568a143?_ga=1.129968268.1082827463.1427723803 (sorry - I’m not sure how to link an article)
His bail has been revoked.
Once Labrie has served his sentence, he’ll be on probation. The judge also told him Friday: "This doesn’t bode well for probation.
Labrie better follow the rules when he gets out.
From the article: “His lawyer maintained Labrie was pursuing a graduate degree that required him to research in Boston.”
I didn’t think you went for a graduate degree until you got an undergraduate degree. Perhaps his lawyer mis-spoke, or he was misquoted.
Do we know what kind of degree he was going for or what courses he was taking online, and with what educational institution?
Also, since the terms of his probation were so restrictive, I’m surprised he didn’t either petition for an easier probation (maybe he did; I don’t know) or just ask his probation officer to allow him to “break” his probation for some special event. If his PO gives him permission for some special event, he’s fine.
It’s amazing that he just decided all on his very own to break the terms of his probation.
