Prep Schools and State Competition

Hi! I’ve been on CC for a while, but I don’t comment very often. This is my first thread, so bear with me here!

I currently go to a public school in California, but am going to Hotchkiss next year and am planning on doing track. I know that private day schools around here have their own league for sports, but get grouped in with other leagues to form sections of the state. Winners of these sections move onto the state competition, and those onto nationals…etc.

Anyways, I think boarding schools generally compete against each other (Not sure…), but don’t know how they factor into state level stuff. Does each state have its own state championship? Or is there some “All New England” thing?

By no means am I a state-level athlete now, but hope to be someday. Any information that you have regarding these levels would be wonderful! Also feel free to PM me.

Thank you very much :)

Prep schools are categorized into their own separate category. The only time a prep school will play a public school is for non-league season games, which, because they are non-league, they don’t count for much. Since you are going to Hotchkiss, you’ll be in New England.

Hotchkiss is in the Founders League, which is comprised of seven schools: Avon Old Farms, Taft, Trinity-Pawling, Hotchkiss, Loomis Chaffee, Kent, and Choate. Upon the Founders League, the Erickson League formally, is NEPSAC, the all-encompassing and all-governing body of prep schools in New England. NEPSAC is split into 5 divisions: NEPSAC, NEPSAC A, B, C, and D. Hotchkiss is in NEPSAC B. Most schools are in either B, C, or D.

The smaller leagues (such as Founders, or the ISL, or Eastern Independent) are grouped closely by location and somewhat by academic tier. The divisions are grouped loosely by location. So when you hear news that a team has been New England champs, they have beaten ALL of the New England prep schools in NEPSAC.

Athletes with particular skill are based on leagues. So for example, there is an All-Founders, an All-NEPSAC, Honorable mentions, and some sort of All-Scholastic. There are All-Americans as well.

Thank you AlexMac. That cleared up a lot.
