Prepaid credit cards

I am looking to get a prepaid credit card for someone doing work for me. He will be driving a truck cross country for us, so he will need money for gas, hotels and meals. My thought was a prepaid credit card that we can reload if necessary while he is on the road; we will also be traveling at the same time so a card that can be loaded online would be best.

While I would like to use an American Express, I think he might find that some places do not accept Amex, so I guess a Master Card or Visa would be safer. I know I can pick up a card at many drug stores and convenient stores, but I think I would prefer a bank owned card. My credit union does not offer prepaid and I am going to check with my big bank tomorrow. Any suggestions for a particular card?

I’d recommend Master Card or Visa over AMEX for just the reasons you’ve stated. If you can’t get one at your bank, try at CVS, Walgreens, or another chain pharmacy, or just any big chain store. AAA used to have them as well, but I haven’t looked into it lately.

Good luck!

Yup, just saw many kinds in Walgreen.

BTW, Banks LOVE prepaid cards, they give the banks so much free float money that they pay a huge commission to the vendors. No wonder the vendors put the cards in the bulk head near the register.
