Preparing for ACT with nothing but practice tests?

I was planning on studying for the ACT by doing nothing but taking practice tests and checking the answers. Most of the strategies provided in books are useless or common sense I think. My friend tried this technique and got a 35 on the ACT, but he’s very intelligent. Has anyone else tried doing this?

Note: Math is my strong suit, but I need to work on English and Science - a lot! Just in cacse that’s important for any reason.
