And in my area, for those upscale homes and buyers willing to customize to their own taste, it’s not uncommon to see the “new” countertops thrown out and replaced again. Have to really know not just what’s been done to homes around you, not just what you see in, eg, an Open House, but what buyers want, what sells. So, back to asking some agents for their experiences and knowledge.
I couid have gone with quartz in my bathrooms that I’m doing now but I went with granite. The backsplash and niche are going to be marble.
I just picked the sconces that will go on each side of the mirror in big bath. http://www.us.kohler.com/us/Purist-single-wall-sconce/productDetail/lighting/426428.htm?skuId=401362
I’m going with same line for all the faucets and accessories.
I’m also not doing gray & white which seems to be all the rage these days in bathrooms, as the colors in my house are all much warmer tones. I picked a natural bamboo for the vanities and everything else plays off of that.
We plan on staying in this house forever as it’s one floor and not big - so no need to ever downsize. The rest of the house has been remodeled from roof to basement and everything in between. So this is last major project that needs to be done.
I feel like the only one (maybe emilybee is with me based on post above) that doesn’t like gray? Repainted the entire interior of our home last year. ZERO gray.
Add me to the list of folks who dislike gray. If I want to see gray, I just peek out of the window and look at the sky.
I think it got popular because of HGTV. Every fricking bathroom and kitchen on every show they do is gray and white.
I think the gray trend sells now, but in short order it will date the house. Like every other trend, ever.
We have one gray bedroom. At the time my kid wanted it to look like the interior of a battle ship. I didn’t like the dark grays he did, so it’s a gray that would be very in now. I’m actually considering painting the other bedroom the same color because it’s a truly wretched toothpaste green now. I’d rather have something that contrasts with the trim, so no white.
Gray was really in style in the 1980’s. I stopped watching HGTV when it became a real estate channel. I got really tired of the party line that every kitchen has to have granite and stainless steel appliances. I finds a lot of granite looks like petrified vomit. Somehow I now have stainless appliances though.
OP says her house is 30 years old. That suggests finger jointed woodwork. I’d have to paint it. Every house I’ve owned except current home has been a fixer upper and I paid fixer upper prices and made profit. Most people with young kids don’t want to do any work. Things that I could not live with are stained pine trim, luan doors, any wall paper, and oak cabinets. Just my opinion and not intending to insult anyone who likes it.
We are beginning to look at one floor homes to age in place. Well probably end up with a home that has the things I’ve mentioned above that I do not like and we will remodel. I’m not sure when we’ll move. Homes in my neighborhood sell in a week or two. This is the home my children were born into. I’ve tried to keep it up to date. Most brass has been banished. The exterior still has Baldwin brass locksets. It’s a fake Georgian house and we live close to Williamsburg.
If you are selling soon start looking online at homes similar to yours. The houses that seem to sell the fastest are professionally staged and the photos are high definition.
Since I like in the 48th sunniest state, no gray! @BunsenBurner probably lives in the 49th or 50th!
so sorry @emilybee but I don’t like CFL lights. There are plenty of LED fixtures available that can provide bright (white) light. I am so tired of the CFL yellow light.
One of the decorating sights I frequent said grays and words on the wall are out for 2017.
I think the gray is very “pretty,” as are the new styles of furnishings that go with it. I can appreciate it at the same time that I don’t want to live in it. It’s not cozy or homey to me. Right now, all the spec homes and flips are overdoing the gray tones and cold white marble. Again, it’s pretty on one level, but I guess it’s “too pretty” to live in for my taste.
That said, our wall paint is supposedly a gray tone. You would never know it. We have also paired it with warm colors to balance out any cool factors.
@OspreyCV22 , I love the stainless appliances. They really can go with just about any style or color scheme.
That’s ok @MaterS, you don’t have to like it.
I’m also having pot lights in the ceiling and the fan will also have a light, so they’ll be plenty of bright light. I love to tub so I want soft light in the bathroom whilst I’m soaking. More relaxing, imo.
Words on walls?!?!?! I had no idea that was even a thing anymore.
re: post #109
I like warm light colors, not overly bright, no hint of blue whatsoever. I would go nuts in a room like that. Same goes for rooms all painted bright white with too much natural light coming in. Reminds me of a padded cell.
No grey on the walls here either.
I’ll consider the opinions of all the grey haters here but not all greys are created equal. Some are much warmer than others. I’m bored with beiges, tans, off-whites. What wall color “neutrals” do you favor ?
My foyer, hallways, living room, dining room & family room are barley. Kitchen has greenish glass tile up to bottoms of cabinets and to the ceiling behind stove (I have a big range hood not a micro w/cabinets over the stove) so I have no paint on the walls at all.

My bedrooms are Navajo white. https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color/OC-95/navajo-white?color=OC-95
I’ve always really liked this color. It can look more greyish or more greenish depending on the light:
On my screen it doesn’t look much like it does in the house. You have to try sample areas.
We recently painted a room gray and I like it so much I’d like to do the hallways the same color. I’m tired of the beige we have had for years.
