Prepping 30 year old house for resale. Opinions, please.

This was the grey that I liked. https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color/HC-172/revere-pewter?color=HC-172. I think I’m going to have to buy some samples. I do really like the abingdon putty.

My bedroom very similar to this color:

I’d say mine is slightly grayer. I painted it years ago and still really like it.

My favorite gray is winter orchard. https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color/1555/winter-orchard?color=1555 None of these colors look right on my lap top, so you should check paint samples before saying you like them or not! I can’t use Navaho White - it just screams dorm room to me.

Some grey paints have hints of green or blue. In the PNW you do need to be careful of the light.
My house is “macadamia” and "“glass” by Devine paints.
It does well with the PNW grey.
That said, I can imagine in other areas of the country that a lovely grey with nice white trim could be outstanding.

Navaho White is the default white-ish in southern CA apts. Or so we joked. Always Navaho White.

I like a slightly warm vanilla-y off-white because I like splashes of color in accents, art, and decorations. I’m still looking for the right shade, not too pink, brown, green, grey, blue or yellow. Lots of design photos show it but when I track the name and look at swatches, it’s off. The color of the cheesecake a friend had tonight. Lol. Or a silk blouse.

And we also have White Dove trim. I guess our neutral is a muted yellow, looks French country, to me. None of my descriptions help you visualize. If I tell you the name, it won’t even look yellow on the screen

I wouid paint my whole house Navajo White if my H wouidnt complain about it so much. imo, it’s just the perfect off white - with no hint of blue or green or pink in it (which I really dislike.) I find it to be a very warm white.

I feel so behind. If grays are out, what color palettes are in? whites?

^ This is completely regional–What part of the country do you live and how is your normal daily light?

But NW is whiter than I want.

Grey’s just a difficult color to get right, as someone said. (Blue, too, imo.) Depends on the rest of the colors in your furniture, rugs, other things. I love the light charcoals, but they’d be tough in a resale. We have a beautiful P&L off-brown in the foyer but it cries for lighter.

Emily, will your bathroom lighting “look good” on you? Eg, when you look in the mirror, will it enhance what you see? Overheads can cast shadows.

BM Linen White is my favorite trim color. Somewhat similar to Navaho white. A creamy white with no pink, green, or blue to it.

I hope so LF but anything is better than what I’ve had for the last 26 years!

That’s why I’m having the sconces, too. So it won’t be just the overhead pots.

I just got the renderings of both baths today from my designer. It’s going to look better than I even imagined. Start date scheduled for March 27.

I had my entire house painted last year. Spent so much time trying to find colors as I don’t really like tan or gray, so there go all the neutrals. The boys chose two different BM tans for their bedrooms. Ended up with more blues than I had intended, but happy with everything.

One really pale tan I used for FR, breakfast room & kitchen was BM Sail Cloth: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color/PM-21/sail-cloth?color=PM-21

It reads lighter than it appears on screen.

I ended up using 16 different colors (four bedrooms, four bathrooms, three full floors). It sounds like a lot, but it all flows together.

Chose a pale pale blue-gray-white for the front hall and upstairs hallways. It’s probably a bit too blue for some people and looks white in direct sunlight, but almost gray at night.

Painted the basement wall unit a sleek, high gloss dark navy that I absolutely love. Walls ended up a very pale gray with a hint of blue, but less blue than the link above. Loved the navy so much that I had the basement full bath walls painted the same color. Everything else in the bathroom is white so the navy looks wonderful. Never thought I would be brave enough to use a color that dark on walls, but I love it.

Paint has given new life to the house.

Don’t you love the names of paint colors? Next lifetime, I’ll take that job.

Comparing some interesting colors after online searching, in a house with crazy light in the PNW, I am going with a misty grayish green and the vast differences in these tones on my wall as samples is unexpected

Sometimes I think the phrase “out of date” should be banned. Living in a “stylish” house that doesn’t make me feel good- ugh.

Definitely discuss what needs/should be done with your realtor. We can only have fun here with our descriptions and comments.

We moved from an early '90’s house up north with honey oak woodwork, cabinets et al. It fits the surroundings. Moved to a late '80’s Florida house with white trim and woodwork almost 5 years ago. Very different climates and surroundings. Renovated the entire house- changed old beat up interior doors and windows with white here. Dislike “antique” brass (old, worn out appearance in my eyes, I liked the newness of bright brass back when) so changed knobs. Went with warmth in the kitchen to replace the PINK (blush shade and trendy) cabinets, counters, some flooring… Painted colors we like (blues, greens and beiges). Had asked our realtors whether quartz or granite would be best for resale. Around here you do what you like and don’t worry about the next owner. Up north we got rid of some blues to be more neutral and went with laminate for the counter. The old neutral good quality carpet stayed.

I would not have wanted to invest in the same high quality carpeting when planning to move- and the old still looked good enough because it was high quality. Likewise any granite I chose could be the turnoff for a buyer- too dark/light… A niece painted her current trim white and is planning that for her new build up north. Not my taste. Being trendy means dating your house when the next trends come along. Anyone remember those shows where people removed the paint from old house trim???

I’m with those who fix things but don’t try to be trendy. The new owner gets the cosmetic choices they prefer. But, I guess some people really don’t care that much and just want it ready without personalizing.

Check out the Benjamin Moore Historic colors. Out main area is Hepplewhite Ivory. We also considered Montgomery White. Both are a creamy color.

There is actually a lot of middle ground between depressingly outdated and overly trendy.

When you are living in your home indefinitely, you do what pleases you. When you are trying to sell, you do what the market dictates; otherwise, you either sit on the market forever, or leave money on the table.

I like the name Marilyn’s Dress! Although I don’t have any dresses that color. I like silver as an accent but grey really makes my skin look sallow.

Marilyn’s Dress is a very pretty color.
