presentations

Yeah so I have a big presentation ( a test grade) on friday. everyone had to read a book and do a presentation that is at least 20 minutes. i just did the presentation for my parents. it was 24 minutes. They said though that I say “umm” too much and I talk too fast. I’m really worried because these are things that I cannot really control . I dunno i guess just wondering if anyone has any advice for this…a cure anyone??? haha.

basically if your teacher is anything like mine, the presentations are just watched with a smile and they aren’t graded seriously…just a random 90-100 depending on if the teacher likes you…honestly. just pretend you’re talking to friends, but a teacher wouldn’t really care about the oral presentation that much.

My teachers really care! I had to do a 15 minute presentation last year and each time you said like/um/uh he took off a point. Luckily, I don’t say these things naturally… but other people got 60s and 50s!

Good luck, btw!

if you can avoid it, don’t go first. or last. go seventh.

Wow…that’d take like…weeks for everyone to present that long of a presentation. What’s your’s about?

actually, first usually gets extra credit or at least graded easier

i had an 80 minute health presentation in which my oral presentation isnt great but the content was awesome so i got a 110

Martha and Jon K. At the beginnning of the year we each got a date for a presentation. Mine is May 5th. We do a presentation every friday. Its spread out all year so its not like we all do it at the same time
Mine is about Walter Cronkite and his autobiography A Reporters Life.

i find it funny…you actually practiced in front of your parents? i think of what I will say while others are presenting actually…except that health one…i would never practice though especially in front of my parents

I practice in front of my parents for a presentation. Those are the only people around me who can give me some feedback.

logistics someone told me it would be a good idea. and im glad i did im a lot less nervous now.

i think you should bs it. maybe have a note card and leave the rest up to the old bser…the only teacher i had that actually noted oral presentation was spanish…with reason of course for that course

Go first, then they have no one to judge it against, or go last when the period is going to end as no one is paying attention :)

Speech and Debate is a god sent for presentations, especially policy.
Teaches you to ******** and sound good without any preparation.

I did an oral presentation and examination on the transition from paganism(Norse mythology) to Christianity in Skandinavia at the end of my freshman year. With almost a year of policy debate under my belt, I was able to make the presentation the night before and make up crazy stories.

Did you know that viking chief’s/slan leaders, at their deaths, would be placed upon a boat soaked in oil? His advisors and closest friends would take a virgin on the boat, and all would proceed to rape her after getting wasted. The deceased’s wife would then stab herself as the advisors/friends lit the boat on fire, there by incinerating the bodies of the chief and wife while the former virgin was burned alive?

That one is actually true and not a crazy story, but you get the idea.

Edit- forgot to say that I was the only person to get an A (98) on the presentation in the class. Minus two for losing eye contact.

oh man i hate presentations. i think teachers make us do presentations just to make us look bad.

A few quick suggestions …

 • I also recommend going 2nd or 3rd and gettting it over with; if you tend to get nervous the longer you wait to go the more time you have to get nervous.
 • Lots of people say um or like or other filler words without even knowing it … in my experience the best way to break the habit is to video tape yourself while you practice your presentation … this will show you if you say um/like/etc … it will also show you if you look ahead while talking … if you keep your hands in your pockets … if you talk too fast or too soft … etc

FYI - a lot of people rate giving presentations as one of the worst things they need to do at their jobs … very few people enjoy doing it … although lots of people are actually pretty good at it!

willmingtonwave and 3togo…there is no first or second or third we each have our own day. but thanks everyone for the suggestion ill try to use them.

de de de…you could go the second or third day, wow are you blonde greenday?

noo they said like…go second or third. and we are each assigned a specific say at the beginning of the year so yeah what i said made sense sorry im not blonde. and ur not funny.

i beg to differ

no i plead

denied…
