Just wondering…what do you folks think about disgraced Ohio State coach Tressel getting the president job at Y oungstown State a while back?

Hadn’t heard that.

Remind me, what did Tressel do? I thought it was pretty minor, like some of his players traded autographs for tattoos. Doesn’t seem too bad compared to what certain former Heisman winners are allegedly getting away with. Although I was more upset about what happened to Maurice Clarett (sp) when Tressel was coach.

I think you’d probably get more action on this thread if you explained who these people were in your headline, versus toss out an obscure name.

I believe most people deserve forgiveness and a second chance. So I have no problem with Youngstown hiring Mr Tressel.

He’s proven that he knows how to run a small organization and compete. Whether that translates well to competing for tuition $, state $, grant $, faculty, and students…remains to be seen. My guess is that he is probably someone whom its not a good idea to bet against.

It makes perfect sense. Jim Tressel was Youngstown States head coach before he went to Ohio State and while there he led them to several championships in their division. He is very well known and popular in Youngstown. There are many in Ohio that feel he may have taken the fall for others and still hold him in very high regard. I personally think he will make an excellent President. It will probably be a less stressful position than head coach of tOSU.

If you live in Ohio or a competing football school, you KNOW the name Tressel.

Tressel is not obscure to anybody who cares about college football. Even those of us who live in Michigan.

If I recall correctly, he originally left Youngstown State chased by scandal, and left Ohio State for essentially the same reasons. This would not be a second chance, but a third. I would be extremely hesitant to hire a man with that kind of history.

I know someone who played for him at Youngstown State. He says Jim Tressel is so good and caring to his players, current and former. My friend would walk on coals for the Coach.

Jim Tressel is very loved in the Youngstown area. Good for him. Everyone deserves a second chance. Seriously John Calipari (the coach currently of Kentucky basketball) leaves every school he’s been at with a cloud of scandal. He gets another job in a minute because he wins. Are we going to ban Coach Tressel because of some tattoo scandal?

Really?

There’s a “30 for 30” short film/feature on ESPN that I recently saw called “Youngstown Boys” in which both Jim Tressel and Maurice Clarett are featured. Interesting take on the relationship between these two products of Youngstown, Ohio.

I don’t see it as a matter of giving someone another chance…THAT would be giving him the YSU football coaching job. This is a huge promotion…cant believe they couldn’t find someone for this lofty position who embodies integrity and scholarship more than Tressel.

Lizardly is partly right. His players did trade autographs for tatts, but that wasn’t Tressel’s big downfall. In addition, the results of the investigation showed that Tressel knew yet said nothing to NCAA as soon as he found out, as he was required to do, and at the initial portion of the investigation, he denied knowing about the tatts. He eventually admitted that he knew and had withheld the info during the initial stages of the investigation.
Some feel his “second chance” was during the first part of the investigation, when he could have come clean but tried to cover up. Much as we hear about politically, the cover-up is worse than the crime.
He didn’t admit having known until evidence clearly proved he did.
